Bleeding in a rhesus negative pregnancy.

Hi there, all.

Any help on this would be brilliant!

I am 8 weeks and have had two minor bleeds; one on thurs just gone and one today- literally spotting. The first time it happened I went to A&E all of a dither and they scanned me and found a distinct heartbeat and all the signs were good. This time I rang the midwife and she said to rest up and if it got any worse I should go back to A&E. It pretty much stopped with only a little brown-ish stuff, which I presume was residual.

The problem is I am Rhesus Neg and I've read that you should have anti-D if you bleed. My midwife seemed to think that I had not bled enough for this to be necessary... I guess she knows her stuff, but i am still a little worried- has anyone else had an experience like mine, and if so how did your healthcare professionals handle it?

Sorry for extremely lengthy post!

i am also rhesus neg and i have found that over the past 5 years i have had 2mc and 2 dd. every time i was pg the rules on anti-d changed in my local health athority. i had anti d after my first mmc this was at 12 weeks. 2nd mc they would not give me anti-d as they said it was too early at 8 weeks. 3rd pg never had any anti-d through out pg and as the baby was neg too didnt have it after.4th pg rules changed again and i had it at about 20 weeks. my point is that they dont seem to know themselves. if i did it all again i would demand it. dont think it does any harm to have it so i would rather be covered.

Im rhesus negative and have one DS and am currently 31 weeks pregnant after a mmc last year.
After DS I had a jab, but nothing during pregnancy. When I had my mmc at 10 weeks I had a jab as they said that because it was medically managed rather than natural I needed it.
In this current pregnancy I bled(mainly spotting) at 6 weeks but no jab, and again at 12 weeks. After this bleed I was told I needed a jab but they only gave it after 12 weeks. I also have jst had another jab at 28 weeks which is now the routine in my HA.
It seems that there is no set national guidelines for the administration of the jabs which is not much help when you are worrying.
Is this your first pregnancy? If it is I believe that they wont neccesarily give you any anti D until after the baby is born as if its a neg too you wont need it, I think its only more important in 2nd and subsequent pregnacies.

However if you are still worried call your midwife again, better to ask the questions than get all stresed about tings.

I'm RhNeg. I haven't had any bleeding but the MW told me that if I did I would need Anti-D asap.

MumNWLondon · 28/04/2010 14:10

I was told only if bleeding from 12 weeks... but call GP if worried.

I mentioned that I'd had a couple of bleeds at my dating scan and they gave me an anti D injection before I left the hospital that day. My own MW never even mentioned this issue so it was lucky the MW doing the scan asked about my general well being and the subject came up.

The feeling from the midwives at my hospital was that any bleed was a risk and worth having the injection for.

IIRC, you only need a jab after a m/c (and I assume the same would apply to a bleed) if you were 10 weeks or more (some regions used to do it only after 12 weeks). I would call them just to make sure though - my m/c was 10 years ago and they may know something new by now.

I am RHNeg and was told I would only need the jab if I bled after 12 weeks.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and had spotting up to 11 weeks.
HTH.

Thanks for all the advice, ladies. It seems that i'm a bit too early at 8 wks to need the jab judging by what you've said, which is a major comfort.

If I know myself, I'll probably still obsess about it in a minor way because it's my first pg (tho I did have a very early m/c in my early 20s when I didn't know I was pg- they gave me the imunoglobulin then, which apparently should mean I'm covered) so I've made an appointment to see my GP just to make doubly sure. My MW is a rather taciturn and surly lady with a terrible telephone manner and she just makes me nervous... have to do something about that, i guess.

The bleeding seems to have stopped for now, tho so fingers crossed it stays away.

I've just found out I'm RhNeg too. I'm 12 weeks now, and I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks last year. I didn't have any injections back then - could that cause any problems this time round?
Bollocks! I'd just started to relax after having my dating scan yesterday.

luciemule · 29/04/2010 23:17

It was just over 5 yrs ago but I'm rh neg and had bleeding in early pregnancy (about 6-8 weeks) and I had to have anti-d straight away - was on holiday- and then again later in pregnancy I think and then after birth.

gaelicsheep · 29/04/2010 23:22

I had a tiny bleed at 28 weeks due to a diagnosed cervial erosion. I had to have Anti-D and a Kleihauer test to check for antibody development, and it really was a tiny bleed. I'd get a second opinion if I were you OP as I haven't heard of there being a cut off before 12 weeks.

im rhesus negative and 34wks pregnant and in norfolk they only give anti d after 12 weeks.i fell at 12wks and was told if it had been earlier they wouldnt have given me the injection.apparently the placenta only takes over after 12 weeks which is when the risk of the blood crossing is the most. something like that. its all changed as when i mc'd at 7 wks 10 years ago I had an anti d then.

you routinely have an anti d injection here sometime between 28 and 32 weeks. i had mine at 30 weeks and i will need another after the birth.

i hope the rest of the pregnany goes well for you.good luck x
