First Pregnant - GP or midwife?

Sorry for the strange thread title, didn't know how to word it!

When I found that I was pregnant 2 years ago, I phoned my GP to ask if I had to make an appointment with the midwife or GP. They said GP. At the appointment, the GP sorted out the forms to send to the hospital. I then had to make an appointment to see the midwife at the practice. At this appointment, the midwife arranged to come to my house to fill in the big book of notes thingy.

I'm pregnant again (yeah!) and have just phoned the doctors to ask who I should make an appointment with and they just gave me the mobile number of the midwife and said she comes to see you for the first appointment.

The receptionist sounded new and as if she wasn't quite sure, so I was just wanting to check if things have changed from last time around and what the procedure is at other practices.

Ta!

I think that the procedures are changing in the UK and that in the future you wont need to see a GP before seeing a midwife. I saw a leaflet in a chemist recently that mentioned this. Go ahead and phone the number and the midwife will keep you right.

Thanks harverina,

Unfortunately no answer on midwife number (it's a mobile). I remember how busy the community midwife was when I was pregnant before, with women in dire need phoning her mobile, which is why I thought it was a bit odd to call her to make appointments (these were all done through GPs reception before).

Will keep trying though!

My surgery it is GP then Midwife. However this is not the same everywhere, so I wouldn't be concerned. My midwife did all the hospital paperwork. My GP just checked urine sample to see if pregnant. Asked me if I was taking folic acid and if I had any questions.

Am pregnant with dc 2 and didn't bother going to the GP - just booked a booking appointment with the midwife. Looking at my folder of notes, there are only two GP visits in the list of when-to-have-appointments and they're only for first babies, so I'm guessing I won't see the GP at all this time. Which is fine because the MWs are lovely!
