Booking Appt Question

dairymoo · 26/04/2010 13:29

I have my booking appt tomorrow when I will be 12+3. My scan is on Friday so not long to wait (plus I had an early scan at 7+3 due to mmc last Nov) but I was wondering whether the midwife will try and find the heartbeat tomorrow, and whether it is even wise of me to ask her. If she finds it, I'll obviously be ecstatic but if she doesn't I think I'll feel a bit anxious.

How likely is it that she would easily be able to find it - then I can balance out the risk!

There's quite a lot of stuff to get through at the booking appointment - bloods, history, urine sample etc - so I think it's worth waiting for the ultrasound, as it's only a couple of days.

My MW has never attempted it at a booking appt, down here they are more just form filling, blood taking, wee testing and question answering. They dont weigh us here either though.

I asked my MW and she looked for the heartbeat. It was looking like she wasn't going to be able to locate it and then she found it! It was faint, but she turned up the monitor and I was able to hear it clearly enough. I was 12 wks to the day. She did say that it is easier to locate so early when it is not your first though.

If you are going to worry if the MW can't find the heartbeat, then don't bother asking. Wait until the scan. But if you can accept that it may just be the location/position of the baby or that it may just be too early, then do ask. It is the most amazing thing to hear

Mine didn't try at my booking in appointment and I didn't ask. At that stage I know it's really hit and miss as to whether they can find it. But despite knowing that I knew I'd only worry and panic if she couldn't find it! Like you, my scan was very soon after so I waited until then.

This is my 3rd pg (after DTs, just pleased it's only one this time!) so I may see how I go on the day. I feel pretty relaxed actually so maybe if she offers I'll let her, and if not, I won't push it. Thanks for the replies

My midwife didn't offer at booking apt and struggled to find a heartbeat at 15 weeks which worried her but not me as i am fortunate enough to feel it moving already.

My mw offered at the booking appt then said maybe it wasn't a good idea (11weeks) but we heard it. Nice because i didn't have a scan until 13w6d so i would have been worrying a lot more.
