question for midwives/hcps

Bit of a strange question, and I wasn't sure where to post it but guessed this might be a place where medical people/ midwives have a look!

I'm pregnant and have a relative in another area of the country who is an NHS midwife. I've had a difficult time with pregnancies over the last year and a half, feel quite private about it and haven't spoken about it publicly.

My question is, if she was curious and looked me up on some kind of NHS database, would my relative be able to see my medical history and pregnancy details? I spoke to her recently about this pregnancy, and, maybe being paranoid, but got a sense that she knew more than I'd said before. Is this possible? I'm not angry at her if so, but since speaking to her have been wondering how I could find out if this is possible, and realised that there must be some wise MNetters who could tell me

At my Trust it is a disciplinary offence to access records of any patient you are not providing direct care for.
I'm not sure how much clinical info is on the IT central spine but I'm sure someone else will.

Ooh, that's interesting, thank you unfitmother. So it's potentially possible maybe. I'd be interested to know how much info they might access then in case anyone knows!

As a m/w at my trust I don't have access to anything apart from the maternity system for my trust. So would not be able to access info on patients from elsewhere.

your relative may just have been generalising from what you'd told her, as she would have experience of many other mums in similar situations, maybe that gave the impression of knowing more than you told her?

I'm from a medical family, and I doubt your relative would risk her job looking you up on the computer - if she's not treating you she'd be hung out to dry if she was caught.

Oh that is interesting stripey and oldmum, thank you. I feel a bit relieved to think that it's probably not likely then. Thanks.

There is no central database system where we can access women's maternity records so don't worry.

That's good to know, thanks PictureThis. It's the kind of thing you just can't know if you're not in the business!
