I am in my 18th week of pregancy and have seen on a few websites that by now i should feel "flutters" due to the baby moving. I have not felt anything. Is this normal?

With my second I had felt nothing by 20 ish weeks - turned out I had an anterior placenta. Think also if it's your first it's not uncommon to feel nothing until 20 weeks or so.

Hevster · 25/04/2010 12:37

i didn't feel my first till about 24 weeks but have felt no 2 since 14 weeks, don't worry it's quite common

ceebs05 · 25/04/2010 12:39

I am 19 weeks on tuesday and have not felt anything I can identify as the baby moving yet. Wasn't too worried until DH said HE was worried I hadn't felt anything yet! I do feel a wee bit anxious about this but trying to tell myself that everyone feels movement at different times.

cardamomginger · 25/04/2010 12:40

Also 18 weeks and can't feel a thing!

Slippers101 · 25/04/2010 12:43

I'm 19+4 and nothing yet either. A book I looked at yesterday said that for the first baby to expect to feel from 18 to 24 weeks. Like everyone else I'm trying not to be concerned. It doesn't help that I'm so impatient though!

First time you are more likely to not know what you are looking for. Also it is more difficult to feel if you are overweight.

Try laying quietly and concentrating on your bump that's the only time I feel mine.

Didn't feel anything till 21 weeks (my first, and anterior placenta). I'm now 24 weeks, and only really notice movements when I'm keeping quite still myself (lying down, or sitting at my desk).

tanmu82 · 25/04/2010 13:34

I wouldn't worry, if it's your first time you often don't feel it until later and it can be hard to identify because you don't know what to expect....I remember my aunt asking me when I was pg with my first if I had felt him move yet and I said I didn't think so, but I had these feelings like 'flicking in water'. She told me that that was the baby. I had missed it because I was expecting 'flutters' kind of like a butterfly.

Astrophe · 25/04/2010 13:37

I didn't feel my first until about 24 weeks...second I felt at 16 and 3rd at 12ish weeks. Try not to worry. If you are anxious, can you get in to see your midwife and have her check the heartbeat?

starshaker · 25/04/2010 13:39

im 22 weeks with twins and its only now im starting to really feel something i can def say is the babies moving. I didnt feel my dd till the day after my 20 weeks scan. Its normal and nothing to worry about (easier said than done i know). In a few weeks you will be begging the baby to stop kicking and give you some peace

blackcurrants · 25/04/2010 13:47

I didn't feel a thing until 24 weeks. Now, 3 weeks later, there's some serious boogie going on in there.

MadameCheese · 25/04/2010 14:23

I've been having the same thoughts, (also 18 weeks). Got myself in a bit of a panic and then all of a sudden loads of movement . I think in the early stages it's easy to miss if you are moving about and not concentrating on it because the movements are that much more subtle

thumbwitch · 25/04/2010 14:33

If you are really worrying about it (and by the sounds of it there is no need) visit your EPU and ask them to check with the Doppler sono-thingy for a heartbeat.
I did this at 19w because I hadn't felt any movement for about 2w and because my Mum had died in that time, so was worrying that the stress had had a bad effect - heard the heartbeat, everything fine, baby started noticeably moving again a couple of days later.

jumblequeen · 25/04/2010 16:37

Do you know what position the placenta is in? This can be a big factor... Mine is anterior (meaning that it is on the front wall of my uterus) so I didn't experience the "flutters" that everyone goes on about - it went from nothing definite movement at about 20 weeks.

DoulaKate · 25/04/2010 22:08

There shouldn't be any reason to worry. I didn't feel anything until 22 weeks with all 3 pregnancies.

MorrisZapp · 26/04/2010 14:05

Me too, I'm 17 weeks and feel nothing so far. I'm thinking of just telling DP I can feel it just to shut him up!

Moijaimelacountry · 26/04/2010 14:08

absolutely normal to not feel it yet. Don't worry. I felt my first at 20 weeks, my 2nd at 15 weeks and my third not until about 22 weeks, placenta was in the way!

I know how nice it is to feel baby for the first time but I assure you in a few months time you'll be begging baby to go to sleep, stop jumping about and Owwwww don't sit on my bladder.

beanlet · 26/04/2010 14:30

Nothing till 20 weeks -- and now he's doing the macarena!

porcamiseria · 26/04/2010 14:41

normal, I am 22 weeks and still barely anything!
