DP has bought us a private scan as a cheery uppy present - any hoo, my last period was 26.02.10 which would put the due date at December 3rd which would make e 7weeks6days

However I think I ovulated on March 15th which would make me more December 7th 7weeks2days

Do you think that tomorrow I will have to have a transvaginal scan, or a normal ultrasound?

gets scissors and bic ready in preporation

Hi - very likely a TV scan, that seems to be the norm up to 8 or 10 weeks, AFAIK. I had one at 6 weeks and then one at 8 weeks, and both times they didn't even bother trying to do an abdominal one.

(I wouldn't say you need to mow the lawn in advance, but whatever makes you feel most comfortable!).

At the EPU I went to they only do abdominal scan after 8 weeks, so anything under is an internal one.

Not sure if this is standard practice though.

What "prep" would I need to do? I had a TV with my DD but that was over 4 years ago and was an emergency situation, and I didnt give one thought to my lady garden - however this is in a very swish private clinic - infact im at the thought of it now

I had an internal with DS1 at 6+1 and a regular ultrasound with DS2 at 8+2. They'll probably try the normal ultrasound first then do a vaginal one if they can't get a clear picture. It's done very discreetly and they don't even look down there as you're covered with a sheet. (I've had several of these during my fertility treatments so have lost all sense of shame anyway!)

I am sure unless you have the Amy Winehouse hair look down there you will be fine. Don't think they have a good look anyway just guide it in and stare at the screen. I know someone who used to put deoderant on before her smears and one day she sprayed on hair glitter instead the doctor laughed so I think they only notice or comment if you have done something out of the oridinary like that tbh.

I was under a sheet, no legs in stirrups either - just like sitting in a dentist's chair, but with knees apart, and a sheet over my lap. So no one actually got any sort of a look at the ladygarden (which was very au naturel), they seemed very good at aiming without needing a visual check!

I guess practice varies from clinic to clinic, but obv it's your insides more than your outsides they are interested in. Although glittery Bits I imagine would grab attention.

OnlyWantsOne · 22/04/2010 11:12

Oh I quite fancy glittery bits

Transvaginal. But it's ok, much less uncomfortable than the abdominal ones where they push the probe down into your tummy in the most alarming way.

dairymoo · 22/04/2010 12:44

I had an early scan at 7+3 and was given a normal ultrasound. I have a retroverted uterus too so they really had to press quite hard to see the little blob, but they did find it and we saw the heartbeat, etc.

Having had TV scans too, I would echo what people are saying that no-one really sees anything 'down there' as you will be covered with a sheet of paper, and the sonographer will know what to do without looking!

OnlyWantsOne · 22/04/2010 12:45

actually, I feel fine about having a TV - I worry more about my partner being a complete div (actually this is my concern for the birth) that he will squirm and fuss

I had a Babybond scan at 7 weeks and it was an abdominal ultrasound

OnlyWantsOne · 22/04/2010 12:58

thats good mines babybond too - where did you have yours?

nunnie · 22/04/2010 13:01

My DH didn't come in he waited outside, as my early scan was to see if it was ectopic really. Because he waited outside they gave me a scan picture so he could see the baby, it had a tail and was quite odd looking but it made DH smile.

OnlyWantsOne · 22/04/2010 13:05

oh and how long did your babybond scan last for>
