Old Wives Tale?

Had a scan this morning to determine presentation, as 36+3 with DC3 and midwife thought baby was breech! (its not!)

Anyway, the sonographer mentioned that the babies heartrate was 154 Beats per min!

So, given my curious nature I googled it and there there seems to be some suggestion that a higher fetal heartrate means its a girl, and lower its a boy?!?

Anyone care to share their BPM = sex of baby?

I seem to recall my DS hovering around the 140 mark, so is it just another 'old wives tale' or is there any truth in it?

Thought it would be interesting and a bit of fun during my last few weeks, that'll teach me being super organised nothing left to do but speculate!

No idea what my DDs BPM were but i remember a nurse listening to DD2 and saying it's a girl isn't it? she said that girls have faster but stronger beats than boys.

Pronoia, interesting link! Blows the old wives tale out of the water!

My DD's rate was frequently 140 or in the 130s.

Octaviapink · 20/04/2010 06:48

My dd's rate was high if she was being prodded by a sonographer's probe!

BertieBotts · 20/04/2010 07:23

I don't think the rate is true - I have heard too much anecdata that it was the opposite. But I think that the one where the midwife listens to the sound it makes is true. They say a girls' heartbeat sounds like a galloping horse and a boy's like a train.

loopydoopy · 20/04/2010 14:19

I was told after midwife listened to heartbeat that she thought it was a girl due to it being fast, she was right my DD is now 6....so who knows!

FairyCakeBump · 20/04/2010 14:40

It's an old wives tale and complete nonsense according to my midwife. My baby is a boy (confirmed by amnio results) with a heartbeat that sounds like a horse AND is 'high'. My bump also 'looks like a girl bump' apparently.

If the old wives tales have something to them, maybe all this means my son is going to be gay...

Ladyemmalou83 · 20/04/2010 14:40

Im due a little girl (or so im told by the sonographer) in june, and her BPM have always been 155ish, until recently where there anything between 138-150

5DollarShake · 20/04/2010 14:47

DS1's heart rate varied every time the mw checked, but was usually around 150-160bpm. He was a boy.
