Gestation period - went early, will it happen again this time?

Hello, ds was born at 38 weeks, waters broke and went into labour 24 hours later. Midwife told me that it was likely I'd go early again i.e. before 40 weeks as she said gestation periods usually the same for a woman. Not sure whether to believe her as sis in law says it's rubbish and she knows plenty women went late after going early first time.
Supposed to finish work at 35 weeks which seems awfully early to me - what if I don't go until 41 weeks? Then I've wasted 6 weeks sitting on my bum eating chocolate and annoying dh who works from home.
Any advice or experience to share?

experience - ds1, 37+0wks just after midnight

  • ds2, 36+6wks just before midnight
i.e. almost exactly the same.

But you can ask x different people and get x different experiences.

38 weeks is still term, not really early.

I finished at 31/32 weeks with both of them, was just so bloody knackered.

Thanks CS. Yeah, I'm not worried about the 38 weeks as was fed up being pregnant by then anyway and it was nice to be the first to go. Just don't want to be too knackered like last time (gave up work week before and wish I'd had more time to myself). But then don't want to waste time at home.

it's like asking how long a piece of string is!, both mine were 5 days early, but a friend of mine was 3 weeks early with her first and two weeks overdue with her second.

So it is a myth then? Midwife just said it so confidently that I totally believed her and am expecting to go at 38 weeks which I now realise is daft. Thanks!

I am sure that everyone is different and there are no hard and fast rules. Personally, I would relish sitting on my arse eating chocolate for a week or 2..
FWIW; DD1; 5 days early
DD2; Bang on due date
DS1; Bang on due date
DC4; Due 9th Sept; place your bets now!!
Good luck

dc1 - 40+2
dc2 - 40+3
dc3 - 39+1 - was not expecting him to come early!!!!

I was wondering this too. In my first pg, I had DTs 5 weeks early and was wondering whether this puts me more at risk of premature labour again this time, or whether the reason I was early last time was simply because I was carrying twins, which are obviously often early. Hmmmm....will keep pondering!

I don't think anyone knows really!

I had DD1 at 33 weeks and thought that it would be just my luck to have DD2 late, but then she turned up at 38 weeks which was just about perfect for me!
