Hi,

Me and hubby are ttc baby no 3, and i seam to have a worry stuck in my head.

When i had dc2 after the birth they were sorting the placenta (or what ever they do) and i dont ever pay attention to that, and i heard the midwife say "oh did you hear that" and i said no what? she said "i just heard it snap" i remeber being in a bit of a daze and the other midwife said in a joking voice " that will be number 5 for manual removal today then" only for me to take notice and say that they never gave me that injection what ever its called to help it out.

Once she did i dont remeber much but all went smoothly etc.

So im a ad worried really as i read another thread about this happening and having to go to theatre.

Any one had this im really worried about it happening again and not being so lucky nest time, i refuse to google it.

sounds like they were being a bit too hands on if you ask me!
it would only snap if they were pulling on it, and as far as I am aware there really is no need to pull it!

you don't have to have the injection, so that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does need time to come out by itself.

maybe next time get your husband to make sure he is paying attention to what they're doing after the baby is born, say whether or not you want the injection, and ask them to just leave you to deliver it then

mumtotwoboys · 19/04/2010 19:59

if you don't have all the meds that mess with the natural birthing process then the placenta should come out easily on it's own.
Did for me

catbus · 19/04/2010 20:26

I had syntometrine (sp??) 1st time around as was too exhausted to push out solo. Last 2 times the placenta delivered spontaneously after 10 mins or so. It has nothing to do with 'meds' or messing with a natural birth process; with all the most natural birth will in the world, if you are going to have a retained placenta, there's not a lot that would have changed that, if anything. I am all for natural births and have had 3 without pain relief at home now, but if after a while this time around I feel nothing is doing placenta wise, I would def go for the injection!

babylove2 · 19/04/2010 20:45

Yeah i think they were just pulling to hard, with both my babies it was never a question of doyou want to to wait just you need the injection and i was like ok. But they were tugging on it and thats when it happend but it just come out it self after that really.

Do you think i need to worry about it if/when i have another?

It is called something not sure what.

I have definately heard that the injection is necessary after epidurals, which indicates that the drugs impair a placenta coming out naturally

catbus · 19/04/2010 22:20

Tugging???!! Blimey..not nice. I would try to regain a bit of control with the aid of your husband. It's your body and if there is no medical reason why they have to do this, then tell them that you want to wait until you feel you can't go anymore; that's if you haven't got it out naturally. Sounds like a really rushed affair. Be firm about what you want!!

thisisyesterday · 19/04/2010 22:37

you can certainly ask to be left for 20 minutes or so to deliver it by yourself once you have had the injection

it isn't necessary for them to tug it i don't think, unless there is a reason why they need to get it out quickly in which case they ought to be informing you of that

starynight · 19/04/2010 22:55

My placenta was retained and had to go to theatre for manual reoval after the doc tried to remove it while i was on gas and air but no luck although mine was not through snapping just would not budge. I understand your worry though we are thinking of ttc no3 and i can not get experiance of manual removel out my head as much as i want another am not sure i could do that again.

moreofit · 19/04/2010 23:11

Cords sometimes do snap under controlled cord traction, which is what they do to remove the placenta after the seperaation bleed, following the injection of syntometrine. Some cords are friable and stringy, others are fat - and stll just tear all of a sudden with little warning. .

If you have the injection they have to pull it out. So she wasn't necessarily tugging or pulling or being too hands on.

If you don't have the injection then you wait and push it out. If there is an increase in bleeding then they will want you to have the injection asap.

They wll suggest the injecton if you have/need any interventons at all, like epidural and prolonged labour leading to the drip to speed things up. These things make a uterus less likely to control bleeding after birth.

moreofit · 19/04/2010 23:12

And good luck ttc!

babylove2 · 20/04/2010 09:16

Oh i suppose that explains it, i had an epidural also my daughter had the suction to get her out, i also had gestational diabetes, not sure if that had anything to do with it.

I was just a bit worried if i had another i would need manual help in getting it out like starynight had, i dont really know what they do when manualy removing but i would rather not have that.

But i never had to have it manually removed with either, i think because she went to help it out straight away but when i said to her she hadnt done the injection she was like oh ok, done that and it all was fine.

Pulling on the cord when you haven't had the injection is contra-indicated.

Also you do not have to have the injection just because you had an epidural. I didn't. I was told that if the epidural slowed my labour down and I needed the drip to speed things up then I would need the injection (i.e. I don't think it's the epi that's the problem, just the drip to speed labour up).

babylove2 · 20/04/2010 09:52

I think maybe what happend was, the midwife thought i had the injection so tried to get it out instead of leaving it!!
