Hi there, Im 22 weeks and been getting them lots too! its not a nice feeling is it? its woke me up a couple of times.
I dont see my midwife til 28 weeks now (second baby) but in my old faithful "what to expect when you're expecting" book it says palpitations are fairly common and can be caused by the increase of blood in the body, so heart having to work that bit harder?
I took that as reassurance but I do try and sit with my feet up and take some deep breaths when it happens (not always easy with a 19month old running around!)
Hope that helps, but let me know if you find anything else out.

Hi Whirley
I suffer from palpitations even when I'm not pregnant. Have had them checked and nothing wrong with me. They can come on / get worse in pregnancy cause of the increase in blood volume, etc. They are probably totally harmless but you can see your GP and get referred for an ECG just to make sure all is well.

Hi, I started getting really unnerving palpitations at about 17.5 weeks. I mentioned it to my consultant at my review and she sent me straight for an ECG which was a bit unnerving. But, everything was completely fine and another consultant who interpretted the ECG results said that they are really common. He said they are called 'ectopic heartbeats', and are harmless but occur in lots of pregnant women due to the added stress the body is under.
Hope this helps and puts your mind at rest a bit. They feel really strange don't they! X

Yup, i have the old faithfull as well and when experiencing palpitations around 16-18 weeks - i too was glad to read it's normal!
Mine, however have calmed down now and i'm 19+4 - so maybe yours will too.
