Anyone else on phenergan (promethazine hydrochloride)?

Hi just been put onto this at 14+4 for nausea and vomitting. And been signed off work for 1 week.

Last pregnancy I was on cyclizine (from 15wks til giving birth) and found it really difficult to keep working due to the drowsiness. It looks from the info that phenergan will be the same.

What are your experiences - is the drowsiness very bad and are you able to go to work?

Bring on the end to the sickness though!!

Im on Cyclizine for vomiting (still at 30+6), Phenergan was never considered. But I do use Phenergan when flying to ease sickness, and also because im scared of flying, it does knock me out completly, I would probably say more so than the cyclizine. Sorry I cant be of any help in answering ur question.

Really hope ur sickness eases VERY soon

Thanks LadyEL. Hmm, that's weird, the gp told me that phenergan is now recommended over cyclizine as the first drug that should be offered for severe morning sickness (hate that term! such a misnomer!!!). Which, since I am very cynical about the NHS, I took to mean it is cheaper than cyclizine! I dread to think how the individual budgets of our doctors' surgeries affect the type of drugs we end up being offered!! Anyway, thanks for the reply and good luck for the rest of your pg!
p.s. very cute wedding pic btw!

Thank you (love that pic too)

I was given Phenergan, it did sod all and I moved onto Cyclizine.
I was off work for two months last time and then carefully controlled my dosage of Cyclizine to balance out the drowsiness against the sickness and manage it at a level at which I could work.
Frankly it was the biggest mistake of my life, as I still got a stroppy email from my boss about my productivity, the week before I went on maternity leave.
Wish I had just taken as much Cyclizine as I needed, stayed at home and rested and not f*cking well thrown up through the entire pregnancy.

Hi, I was given phenergan very briefly when I was going under with hyperemesis. It made no difference to my levels of sickness and contributed to me ending up in hospital again. It also made me feel very restless and I had very disturbed sleep. A day or so later they moved me back on to cyclazine and metoclopromide. The thing that every doctor I've seen stresses though is that it's really a case of trying to match the drug to the person, and what doesn't work for one person could be perfect for another. So fingers crossed that this is the right one for you and that you're feeling much better.

I had a similar experience with work last time round SethStarkaddersMum, this time am determined just to take time off if I need it and not stress and feel guilty. I was literally worrying myself sick about work last time and they were bl**dy ungrateful about the effort I was making to keep working at least some of the time.

Bastards!
It's because no-one who hasn't experienced HG really understands it - they go 'oh yes, I know what it's like, my wife was really sick, she was sick every single morning for a whole fortnight' and they think you are making a fuss over nothing.
Unfortunately quite a lot of GPs come into this category which can make it a bugger to get the appropriate medication/sicknotes.

Ladyemmalou83 · 21/04/2010 13:51

Oh I so know where your coming from with attitudes at work and peoples understanding of HG. I had the 'so you've just got morning sickness' comments from my boss and colleagues - I wish it had just been morning sickness. Oh well I only have another 15 shifts left of work, so wont have to put up with some of the comments anymore
