What should I see at 5 weeks 3 days scan?

Hi,

I got an early scan due to previous miscarriages (no DCs yet) - there was a sac, and she thought she could see a yolk sac in it. Nothing else (no heartbeat or anything) - I'm 5 weeks 3 days. Does that sounds right? She said it was right for my dates, I just don't have any confidence it's going to progress - and am turning into a mad lady second guessing the sonographer, she did seem to frown a lot while she was looking at it.

Realise I'm a nutter but please can anyone tell me if what I saw was normal (i.e. just a sac and maybe a yolk sac too)? Wish I could fastforward and see if this one works out!!

Yes that does sound normal for dates. You wouldn't expect to see a heart beat until more then 6 weeks. Do you have another scan booked?

Hope this one sticks!

Thanks! She's booked me in for another one in two weeks (i.e. at 7 weeks 3 days). I'm really hoping I'd see a heartbeat then, I think I could probably relax a bit more then...

EggsandBacon - having had many many early scans, I can say that it sounds about right, and it is good that it is measuring the right size. Hope your next scan is good too.

That's right, you really can't see anything other then a yolk sac and a thickened endometrium. I hope all is well on your next scan.

Yes at 5+5 I could see a sac and nothing else. This was normal and to be expected. At 7+4 a growing blob with a heartbeat.

At over 7 weeks, assuming your dates are right, you will see a heartbeat.

Hi EggsandBacon
Just seconding what the others have said... totally normal. After a previous mc I had a scan at 5 weeks this time, and they couldn't even see a yolk sac... I freaked out, but am now 16 weeks and all is fine. Scans this early can sometimes cause more stress than reassurance. I also had to wait too weeks for the next scan and it was a loonnng 2 weeks but we got there... Wish you all the best for the next scan, there is no reason for pessimism at this stage

Sounds bang on - I had an early scan at 5+5 due to bleeding (implantation). The scan showed a yolk sac and a gestational sac. Was told it was far too early to detect a heartbeat. On the screen it looked to me just like a grey blob.
Had follow-up scan at 8+3, and by that stage the heartbeat was detectable.
Congratulations! And good luck XX

Thanks so much everyone, that's really reassuring. I kind of wish (a little bit) I hadn't had it as it didn't really work in terms of reassurance, but at the same time, at least when I go in two weeks I will know if it's progressing this time. Jeez!! No one ever told me pregnancy would be like this, in the movies they all just look really happy and have weird food cravings, what a big fat lie!!

Really appreciate it, thanks for telling me about your scans.
