holiday constipation remedy

going on a road trip to the US in May and thinking ahead about constipation - nice!

I have a healthy diet, drink lots of water etc etc, but have found that the only thing that keeps me going is a morning bowl of porridge and glass of Sunsweet prune juice - any other brand just does not seem to work!

So instead of carting quite a few bottles over there (where I'm going it might not be available) I was wondering about other smaller, more portable options that might work and would be safe in pregnancy - will be 22 weeks at that point

So far thought of Syrup of Figs, Lactulose from the docs, or Fybrogel (which the lady in Boots would not give to me)

any others? can't guarantee what I'll be able to get for breakfast as moving hotels every 2 days, but will be getting lots of fresh air and exercise which will help

Will be watching this with interest. I'm away in May and instead of thinking of the normal holidays essentials, I've found myself focussing on whether I'll be able to buy All Bran over there!

You can get sunsweet stuff over here, it's quite a big brand. I'm in the New York City area, and I've seen it in New Jersey.
But that's not to say it's not a good idea to have some alternatives handy. Does eating dried prunes work for you? Cos you can get those everywhere, though it's often referred to as 'dried plums' and 'plum juice' here.

can barely stomach prune juice, definitely can't stomach prunes, I've tried!

i'll be in the middle of nowhere in Utah, so hoping for something small i can buy here and try beforehand

Aaah I see - bad luck on having to choke it down, then! (Do you like dried apricots? They do the same work as prunes to me, but it does help that I like them both, I suppose).

fraid that's the same. have never been able to eat dried fruits or seeds or nuts. fresh fruit yes, but the only combination that worked for me was porridge and sunsweet

guess i'm hoping for a miracle!

thefatladyscreams - just an update in case you're still interested

Was at the doctors yesterday and she has prescribed Ispaghula Husk Gluten-Free powder, which is basically Fybrogel. Think the lady at Boots was just being over cautious with a pregnant woman, but as it's free from the docs

have a great holiday and hope you can find some All-Bran
