big size bump = big baby?

I know a lot of people say the size of your bump has nothing to do with how big your baby will be, but I'm 28 weeks and my bump is absolutely huge. Saw the GP today he asked how big we were at birth (I was 7 lbs 6, DH was 5lbs 10 at 40 wks) and then said "Are you absolutely sure you're only 28 weeks?"

Everyone I know comments on how enormous my bump is, and people I haven't seen for a while think I'm about to pop.

I'm now a bit worried that my baby is going to be enormous and that I won't cope with the pain. Does anybody have any reassuring words on bump size v. baby size?

GPs know b*er all about pregnancy. What does your MW say?

In my case it was big bump = fat stomach Seriously, I don't think the two are related. Could be the way the baby is positioned or lots of fluid. I don't think you can ever be sure of a baby's size until it exits.

In my case - barely visble bump = 7lb 10 baby at 38 weeks.

Lulumaam · 13/04/2010 15:31

I was the same, at 20 weeks, people were saying, ooooh not long to go..! grrrrr

although fundal height was always = to weeks gestation, i had a mahoosive bump both times

but the babes were 7lb13 and 7lb8 respectively.

rubyslippers · 13/04/2010 15:32

you may have a lot of fluid

it can also be to do with the way you are carrying your baby

i was pretty big with both mine and they were 6lbs 3 oz and 6 lbs 6 oz

if your MW is worried about your fundal height then you can get a growth scan (I had one as they were worried DD was too small)

Yes, there is a bit of the fat stomach about my bump, but only about an inch at most -- most of it feels hard.

I am the sort of person who retains a lot of water have just started with the massively swollen ankles, legs and hands so I'm hoping that accounts for some of the bump size! Still worried though.

I was the opposite - both times people told me how I was "carrying small" and how neat I was.
DD was 7lbs 4 and DS was 9lbs 10 so big difference in their weights but more or less same size bump.
Means nothing I would say so try not to worry!

Kajaloloo · 13/04/2010 15:37

Oh and I'm a size 16 so it wasn't that I was "neat" cos I'd started out that way!

cinnamongreyhound · 13/04/2010 15:38

People always commented on how small my bump was but always measured 2-3 weeks bigger than I was. My midwife said I was definately having a 10lb+ baby at 2 weeks overdue he was 8lb 12 1/2, so not tiny but certainly not over 10lb.

This time I have a high BMI so have extra growth scans, when I asked the consultant if they were more accurate than the fundal height measurement he said not really! I really wouldn't worry, everyone likes a to comment on a bump!

Bleatblurt · 13/04/2010 15:40

I had massive bumps and had massive babies! First pregnancy I was almost the same circumference as I was tall!
My babies were 10lb 8oz at 38w, 8lb 6oz at 36w, and 7lb 9.5oz at 35-36w.

People were always commenting on how I must be about to drop when in fact I was still in the 20's weeks. I would just do a non-comittal hmm noise and smile.

boogywoogy · 13/04/2010 15:42

I had excess fluid with my dc and was enormous. I had quite a noticeable bump from around 10 weeks. Baby wasn't small at 9lb 4 but not as large as I expected.

itstimenow · 13/04/2010 15:47

My bump was enormous, so was my arse and my tight and my boobs and I indeed gave birth to a 2 big babes : 9.15 and 10.6 but we are all different, one of my friend is due any day, her bump is enormous but the rest is all slim ;-)

MiaWallace · 13/04/2010 15:57

I was HUGE. Looked full term at around 7 months.

Managed to pop lots of buttons off my maternity clothes.

Dd was 8lb 10 so not small but it was mainly fluid. When the MW broke my waters she actually swore because there was so much.

Greenshadow · 13/04/2010 16:00

Don't know about big stomach meaning big baby, but the reverse was true for me - 3 tiny tummies and 3 fairly small, full term babies.
I never looked 9 months pregnant so never got the sympathy / attention that friends got...
