Worried about amnio - blood in sample

Hi everyone,
I am 43 and 16 weeks pregnant with my first baby. My nuchal scan came back as 1 in 30. Been worrying myself silly since I found out I was pregnant (cos of age and also because I suffer from Epilepsy) I've been avidly reading the discussions on mumsnet but this is my first post !
I had an amnio last Tuesday and they had problems getting the sample out and as a result the fluid was stained with blood. The midwife said this meant that they 'might' not be able to get a result in the usual 3 days (ie the FISH test) and that it could take 2 weeks. She said she would phone on Friday either with the result or to let us know that they had not been able to get a result. So we waited around all day on Friday on tenterhooks but no phone call came. So now we are thinking all sorts - did the result come back as bad and they didn't want to spoil our weekend with bad news, or were they not able to get a result or will we receive news on Monday. The worrying is torture as it is, but to have to wait another 2 weeks will be unbearable.
Has anyone else had blood in their amnio and how long did it take to get the results? How did you cope with the waiting?
Before the amnio the consultant did a thorough scan of the baby and everything appeared OK (this is at 16 weeks) - ie. it had a nose and its limbs were normal sized. Does anyone know if this is a good sign?

Hi they wouldnt not call you if the result was bad - I had the same thing said Id get a call Friday but we didnt hear until 10 days and it was awful. My nuchal was 4.6 and the combined test came back at 1 in 18. The Amnnio came back clear though.
We did get told if all the measurements were normal and that there were no other markers (if the femur is shorter or a bone in the nose is missing or reduced umbilical srteries to name a few) that it was a positive sign.
I hope you hear soon, the waiting was the worst for us too.

Hi, I had the same thing when pregnant with dd1 (blood in sample). My FISH actually came through fine, but there was a culture failure with the full karyotyping (not sure if it was related to blood - there's 1% failure rate anyway), so we just had the FISH to go on (which was fine, as some places only do the FISH now according to ARC). I also had to ring for my results, despite them saying they'd ring me by the Friday. Remember how nervous I was ringing on the Monday, but all was well. I'm sure you'll be fine xx

Hello nutella, how did you get on today?

Nutella43 · 13/04/2010 12:47

Hi Mumsie123, thankyou for checking up on me :-)
well, I phoned them yesterday morning and they hadn't been able to get a result from the FISH test so now I have got to wait another week at least. I might hear on Friday (but on past experience I doubt it !) or sometime next week. I was really really upset when they said they couldn't give me a result because it is mental torture waiting and wondering what the outcome will be. But I am trying to be strong, I know people have much worse things to worry about. I will let you know when I have some news....let's hope it's good.
thanks everyone for your support xxx

Hi Vicky, thank you for your reply. It is a real help to hear other people's experiences. You mentioned that they told you reduced umbilical arteries was a marker? On the report they gave us after the scan when they did the amnio (16 wks) it said something about the cord having 3 parts, I can't remember the exact terminology, but I looked it up on the internet and it said it was normal to have 3 parts to the umbilical cord - does that sound like a good sign ?
thanks
xxx

My wife gone through amniocentesis two weeks before, we got reports after 10 days with thalassemia major /minor (not clearly mentioned major or minor). In the report they mentioned that the amniotic fluid blood stained. I want to know whether it makes difference to the results? Shall I go for amniocentesis again? Please guide me
