Can anyone help me with this? When I was born (30something years ago!), my grandparents bought a wooden crib that's been used for all babies in our family since. It was last used about 11 years ago. Now I'm pregnant and would like to use it, but am a bit worried about any potential safety aspects arising from old varnishes etc. Anyone know, or know where I can find out, about this? Ta!

Both of my children have slept in a crib bought for my SIL almost 40 years ago. Just like yours, it's been used for every child in the family since.

I made sure it was clean and undamaged and bought a new mattress both times. DD is in it right now and is it's 10th user. SIL will be 40 next year and there's nothing wrong with her either

Ours has a matt paint finish though and isn't varnished.

Not sure where you'd go looking for advice on paint finishes. Maybe try repainting/varnishing it to cover any old finish. I would say that as long as the paint isn't chipped and is not likely to get chewed then it should be safe.

We're planning on using the family crib too while the baby is tiny, I love the fact that me and his aunts, uncle and his little cousin will all have slept in in too. Hadn't thought about the safety issue, I'd just sort of assumed it was fine as long as we gave it a clean and bought a new mattress each time. But if anyone else knows anything different I would be interested too?
