Hi Everyone,

Just starting to organise what I need to take to the hospital and I'm a bit stuck with what to buy/pack for bump. My book just says to pack baby clothes - but what exactly!?? Would appreciate any thoughts on this, Thanks Cejay

Just baby stuff? You will need

nappies
nappy sacks
cotton wool
little pot for putting water in to clean baby
or wipes

babygrows
vests
coat and hat for coming home
blanket for coming home

muslins

I'd also definitely take energy tablets or gel packets - you won't want to eat anything during labour but you'll need to keep your energy up. A couple of old t-shirts are good to labour in (I threw up about six times so went through several...) and you'll want toiletries, toothbrush etc so you can feel human again. . Baby won't need much - a nappy, a babygro, a blanket and a carseat!

I'd take a few baby vests and babygros - if you are in for a couple of days the baby goes through loads of stuff and the hospital don't provide anything. No fancy outfits though (or maybe a nice one for going home in!). Oh, and a towel for the baby.

Check what the hospital provides:

mine will provide all nappies, cotton wool etc, as well as a hospital gown if I wish.

ilovesprouts · 05/04/2010 20:58

ooh our hospital does not you have to take everything in ,wich hospital are you going to

asampras · 05/04/2010 21:20

some little mittens! We were in the hospital overnight and by the morning my DD had little scratches all over her face.

butterscotch · 05/04/2010 21:36

asampras - babygros from next/matalan/sainsburys/john lewis you can get them with the roll down as scratch mittens much less hassle than scatch mittens!

What they said above for a "normal birth" I'd say 4-5 babygros & vests as you don't know how sicky the baby is going to be or how long your be in!

Also worth having an extra bag or two packed at home with extra bits for you and baby so partner/mum etc.. can just come along with extra bag if your in longer then you don't need to try to explain where everything is!

I also left a "packed" nappy bag in the car with the basics in!

Thanks everyone. I'm going to St Peter's in Chertsey, Surrey - I get the impression that nothing is provided, but I'll check. Do I need socks and hats too?
