Threatened MC - Experiences?

Hi, I've been having mild period-type cramps and some brown spotting for the past few days. I am 5 weeks pregnant. Spoke to Dr. today who said I am having a 'threatened mc' and am also booked in for a TV scan next Thursday. So all it is now is a waiting game - it's horrible just wish I knew either way. Has anyone else had experience of this?

I had a threatened MC with my DS, now nearly 2. At 14 weeks I had a bright red bleed and presumed the worst. Went to A&E and they checked my cervix was closed and scanned me and baby was ok.

Since that though I have had 2 missed miscarriages, where I have had no bleeding or spotting but at the scan there was no heartbeat.

So bleeding may not be bad news, I have heard lots of examples where spotting or bleeding does not end badly. But exactly as you say, it's a waiting game. Try not to worry, I know that's impossible, but do try.

Good luck.

Although bleeding is not 'normal' - it's very common. I bled three times in my last pregnancy (mostly red) and have bled a lot so far this time (I'm just 12 weeks, but am going in tomorrow again after another bleed, so wish me luck!), but I hopw it's just what I do..

I really hope all goes well for you xx

Yes, with this one, pg no 3. Had bleeding, both dark and bright red and very painful cramping at 7weeks (sp?)(sent for scan and could see hb) and then again at 11 weeks and was surprised to see growing baby at the 12 week scan. In the end they put the cramping and bleed down to infection and gave me antibiotics.

The waiting one way or another is very hard, I agree. They will probably want to wait a week to give the bleeding a chance to settle down and the later they leave it the more chance of seeing something conclusive either way.

Very best wishes for Thursday, planner.

I had some bleeding early last week following a few days of period like cramping. Bright red on the Tuesday, which got darker and less until it stopped on the Friday.

Had a scan on the Tuesday afternoon and while no one at the EPU mentioned miscarriage or threatened miscarriage, that is what I assumed. I received a scan and as with jollister, cervix closed, growth and heartbeat were fine. Scan woman put it down to hormonal changes.

However I have to wait 4 weeks now for my official 12 (although it will be nearer 16) week scan - I'm terrified that I'll turn up and they'll find no baby.

It's such a worry, this is mt 2nd pg and finding it so much more worrying.

One thing reassuring me slightly is that my sickness is continuing as before, so that's getting me through.....although so many signs can mean both good and bad!

It's a very confusing thing, but you're not alone and I hope everything goes well at your scan.

Thank you everyone so much for your encouraging messages - made me feel lots better. Cramping still there but spotting comes and goes and is not heavy. Still have all pg symptoms so fingers crossed. I really hope it is good news but if we are prepared for the worse too x

planner i've never had a 'threatened mc' at least i've never been told i have!

i'm 10 weeks preg with my first dc having had 2 previous mc. at 7 weeks i started bleeding and cramping. i thouight the worst and organised a scan. but as far as i was concerned i had lost the baby and i was just waiting to mc.

i was so shocked to see a strong heart beat and see the baby i really thought it was the end! i'm still bleading now on and off, they couldnt find a reason for it on the scan so i think its something that i will just have to accept is going to happen.

so although bleading isnt normal in a pregnancy (cramping is but not really painfull cramping) it happens and it could all be fine yet.

when is your scan?

planner26 · 02/04/2010 10:02

Thanks addicted... it's next week on Thursday I should be 6 weeks then so hopefully they will be able to tell me something then. Just hate waiting and thinking about it all the time! My dp has been fantastic and my family but I know they are all worried too.

Glad you are ok - have just seen your thread - I have had 4 mc and have two beautiful children now - it all works out in the end although I remember all too well the worry - my recommendation to you is to keep in touch with your EPAU and if you have any worries whatsoever give them a call. I had 2 mc before my first born and I bled all the way up to 16 weeks - I did get weekly scans - when we tried for a second child I had 2 more mc, got pg again and thought I had got a period, subsequently bled lots with my daughter - I again got weekly scans - more for reassurance. My EPAU were great and explained that spotting can be a good sign in that the egg is burying itself tightly into your womb. Take it easy and good luck. X

planner26 · 08/04/2010 14:03

Thanks ironing...yes they were very good at my local EPAU they told me to just get straight in touch with them rather than GP if any problems and that they have an after hours service too, so I felt very supported and so glad I went. They said they didn't know cause of bleeding but that was normally the case and touch wood it hasn't happened for 5 days now - you're right it is the panicking and worrying that's the worse. I swear I've had about three hours sleep the past few nights! Roll on 12 weeks....

Try and rest now - I know it is hard to stop thinking about it and you are probably wondering what you had to think about before becoming pg, once you have stopped worring about the pg you will have nicer things to occupy you - nappies etc!!!

please keep posting so we know how you are getting on.

Take care.

Hi all,
Can light brown discharge at 5 weeks, with no pregnancy symptoms mean MC?

planner26 · 09/04/2010 22:32

Hi riat any bleeding/ cramping could possibly mean miscarriage, but it also could possibly mean a number of other things such as implantation, cervix erosion and sometimes it is just unexplained. My doctor said to me, whilst it is relatively common to have spotting in early pregnancy, you should always get it checked out - they will put you mind to rest.

Hope this help and good luck
