Is it ok to drink green tea while pregnant?

There's a sentence in my edition of What to expect when you're expecting that says something like "green tea shouldn't be drunk in pregnancy because it may cause problems with in cell division".

I have never ever seen this confirmed anywhere though. Does anyone know if there is evidence for this or can I go ahead and drink it? I love it and need a coffee substitute!

Hi. Have a look at this
Looks like most things in pregnancy and that sensible amounts are fine. Some concerns about folic acid, so maybe more of a factor in early pregnancy.x

Don't know about a legitimate confirmation, but I always drink green tea with lemon - by the bucket load!

Drank it all the way through my first pregnancy (until I started on the rlt; yum!) and have done the same with my 2nd.

#2 hasn't arrived yet - but no problems with gorgeous darling DS1!

Cross post...

Having read the above link - I have to amend my comment 'bucket loads'...

Probably not more than 3/4 a day in all honesty (phew, lucky!)...
But still - not had any problems.

I did take folic acid throughout my pregnancy tho.

Never heard that BUT did recently read that green tea is HIGH in caffiene...but you can get decaf GT in Holland and Barrett and Asda (and probably other shops) if that eases concerns any?!

Re Caffeine - it is generally lower in caffeine than normal tea - up to 30 mg per cup so - provided it's your only source of caffeine you can have 5/6 cups per day.

Other things you can do to reduce the caffeine is use your teabag twice, or better still use loose leaf teas and use them twice, or discard the first brew.

I never found out what that line in WYEWYE was referring to. The folic acid thing seems to be worth considering though,

I read it was something to do with stomach cramps I used to drink it and take primrose oil when trying to concieve and was advised to stop taking both mid cycle due to stomach cramps but I have gone off all hot drinks now so couldn't tell you if this is correct or not sorry x

Hmm interesting. Seems to be a "fine in moderation" thing thing then, one or two cups a day.

Thanks for all the replies!
