Have to have 4 weekly scans due to small limb bones and yesterday she was scanning the eyes and said there was cataracts, and showed her student and the other lady in the room. They all made 'intrested' noises and moved on. Consultant said they usually see lenses (lens' ?) but not cataracts. Being nosey, I started to google and it keeps saying they are linked to birth defects, but the consultant acted as if t hey were normal, though she had said she had never seen them. Is there different sorts of cataracts?

Hi there are several types of cataracts in 2 main catagories congenital and aquired - babies are born with congenital cataracts though i hadnt ever really thought about them showing up on a scan.
i would definitely insist on further discussion about this with the consultant !!!!
in certain congenital cataract is is vital that the baby is seen by an ophthalmologist at birth and may need surgery to remove them within the first few weeks of life !
some congenital cataracts can be assossiated with other syndromes but not always
there is often a genetic factor - do you have a family history of congenital cataracts?

sorry also meant to say that i think congenital cataracts are quite rare

I don't know of anyone with cataracts in my family.... can they tell by the scan what 'type' they are? I think I may go to the Fetal Medicine Centre for a second opinion on this all - I am worried now.

I was born with a congenital cataract! Noone in my family has them. I've had to have regular eye tests, but I don't wear glasses and my vision is perfect. You can't see it unless it's seen under UV light, it's a crescent moon shape over one corner of my pupil. My mum was told when I was a baby that it was like a birth mark and rather then presenting on my skin, I got it on my pupil. I don't think she was told of this on a scan though, but this was 22years ago and I'm pretty sure she only had one routine scan. Don't worry sure your baby will be ok.

As i said there are lots of different types of cataracts but i am shocked that they did not discuss things more fully and have left you worrying! Hope you get some answers soon
