25 weeks pg and already gained 13kg

Hi,
I've just come back from the MW and feel like shit. I've gained 13kg since become pg. I had a wobble a few months ago thinking I'd gained shit loads of weight but it turned out my mum's scales were wrong. But this time it's real. The midwife gave me a bit of a bollocking. She said I should be gaining 12 kg max in THE WHOLE PREGNANCY.
My pre pregnancy BMI was 23.1, and I've had a look online and it says that I can put on a max of 15.0kg in the pregnancy so I'm ignoring her to some extent and going by the allowance for my particular BMI.

BUT the problem is, if I wanna stick to that then I can only gain another 2.9kg in the next 15 weeks. Is this possible? Anyone else put on ALL their weight at the beginning and managed to put on only a little bit in last 15 weeks?

Thanks for getting to the end. Hope someone can advise...

sorry, babycentre website said with my pre-preg BMI I can put on a max of 15.9kg not 15.0kg.

I don't think you should try to only put on 3kg for the next 15 weeks, it doesn't really work like that. The baby will be getting heavier now, so you don't want to be attempting to restrict that (not that you really could but you might make yourself ill / faint in the process).

If I was you I would look at what you are eating and if there is anything obvious (like kilos of chocolate or something similarly non nutritious) then try to cut that out from now. But really just relax and worry about losing any spare after you've given birth.

I have put on quite a lot of weight at the beginning of this pg (3rd). I saw the MW yesterday, and she measured me and didn't seem too worried, she said as long as I was active, bp ok and not bloating out around face etc then I should be ok. I know that weight gain slows down in the last 3rd of pregnancy hopefully this will make a difference.

Thanks.

I think I have been overeating tbh. I gave up smoking when I found out I was pg (was on about 30 a day cos had just finished writing thesis and had been living off cigs and coffee for a few months) and I think I've just been filling the gap. with bread.

I'm just gonna cut down to 3 healthy meals and one healthy snack and do some increase my exercise (I'm an academic/writer so literally sit at my desk - which is actually my bed - writing for 12-13 hours a day at mo. stopping only to eat. frequently and hang out with DS every now and then (DP is SAHD. I don't leave him on his own all day)) but yes, point is I do NO EXERCISE.

didn't know that weight gain slows down in last trimester. there is hope then! wish my MW was more like yours hazeyjane...

Try not to worry and just try to eat sensibly. I think the whole health profession is going totally overboard with weight and obesity recently and unnecessarily panicking people. I can see it leading to health and eating problems if they are not careful.

FWIW I gained 4 stone with DC1 and 3 stone with DC2 (not sure what that is in kg's - a lot, I assume!). We were all ok and midwives never commented at all (DC2 born 9 years aog though).

I am 24 weeks now and have not been anywhere near a set of scales since booking but if my mw comments I have "gained too much" I will not be held responsbible for my actions!

Don't be too hard on yourself. We're all different. My weight gain was pretty slow until 24 weeks, but since then I've put on about 18 pounds in just 8.5 weeks which has made me have a real vendetta against my bathroom scales! Been told there's no specific time for baby to have a growth spurt, they're all different. I seem to have had mine over the end of 2nd tri/ beginning of 3rd tri, you may well have just had yours earlier. Just enjoy your pregnancy

If it helps at all, I put on a fuckton of weight with my first pregnancy (30+ kilos) by basically eating everything in sight, and it did all come off afterwards. Giving up smoking does sound like the culprit, but you've done so well to manage that.

Your healthy eating/exercise plan sounds good - nothing to add really to that! Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

I don't weigh myself as I don't want to get freaked out. I've probably put quite a few kilos on, but I feel healthy and well. At my antenatal check the MW doesn't ask to weigh me.
It would be just too depressing to weigh myself now at 25 weeks!

NoahAndTheWhale · 26/03/2010 16:49

I put on loads of weight both pregnancies - over 4 stone each time. It came off again (after first pregnancy all of it and more by about 9 months afterwards). Took longer after 2nd pregnancy but did go.

Different people put on different amounts of weight - I wouldn't worry about it much and definitely not try and restrict it at all.
