Pate?

I know you are not supposed to eat pate but I have this terrible craving for pate on toast. Its awful I actually wake up thinking about it.
what are the reasons you cant eat pate is it one of those things that are bad for you in large amounts or is it one of those things that is bad for you if you have even a little bit?

If I cant have it at all any idea on a way to satisfy my pate craving without actually eating pate? are there any pate substitutes??

I understand it is primarily about not ODing on Vitamin A (which would be hard to do with a tiny bit of pate alone), but you might want to double check that it is not about a toxoplasmosis risk.

i had a bit fwiw - my cravings were pate, dolcellate and sushi. maybe more contrariness than cravings

would mushroom or aubergine pate do the trick?

I think it is because of the liver in pate so am guessing a fish or vegetarian one would be ok - probably not going to satisfy a proper pate craving though!

winnybella · 24/03/2010 18:43

Pate has liver but it's fine unless you'll have a pound of it every day for the entire duration of your pg
Vit.A is important and you need it, but there are theories that it can harm the fetus IF you overdose on it, not if you have a bit of pate on toast.
Listeria is the bug.
Very unlikely and you can get it from many other foods, not just pate and soft cheese.
Because you're pg you are slightly more at risk of catching it (your immune system is a bit down now), but it's a very small risk.

I did have some pate last pg accidentally and the MW said not to panic because after 13 weeks. Wouldn't have more than a taste though.

MumNWLondon · 24/03/2010 18:54

I discuss with my GP - ok to have some liver just not huge amounts - baby NEEDS vit A for development, problem is if you overdo it.

She said easier for NHS to say avoid that say a little is ok.

ohnelly · 24/03/2010 18:56

You shouldnt have any pate even veggie ones apparently

Rindercella · 24/03/2010 18:56

I have heard though that it is any kind of pate - including fish/veggie that is potentially not great, and so not just because of liver content. According to the NHS website, it's because of the risk of listeria why pate is not recommended.

I am craving it like crazy though and dribble a little bit every time I go t my local deli! Ah well, due date is today, so I shouldn't have too much longer to wait!

fernie3 · 24/03/2010 20:13

well maybe I will get a teent tiny pack and have just a bit. I have eaten cooked meats liek salami etc (which I think you are not supposed to?) so maybe pate would be ok I dont know!.

fernie3 I was told that the main risk of soft cheeses and pates is the listeria bacteria, but if I cooked the things then I could eat blue cheese and brie (which I did!).

So, I'd suggest if you're really craving it but want to stay in the safe side, to put it on toast and put it on the oven, or heat the pate in a pan to kill the bacteria.
