Bitter taste, is this normal?

I'm 14 weeks pg with my second baby, and have suddenly experienced the most disgusting symptom. I have a constant bitter (not metallic)taste in my mouth, which makes everything I eat taste like that. For the first day I though everything I ate was off, and was horrified to find it was me. Into the third day now and it seems here to stay. Does anyone have any experience of this? It may have nothing to do with my pregnancy, but I have a vague memory of this happening last time. My DH says I don't have bad breath, I'm not ill and I happen to have had a dental check up last week. It's making me feel very sorry for myself as I was just starting to enjoy eating again after weeks of morning sickness. Please advise.

Hi Dormouse - you're not going to like this. I'm 36 weeks in my 4th pregnancy and everything I eat leaves a horrible aftertaste. Everything is fine at the time of eating, but afterwards my mouth feels like a sewer. I've had this symptom since the first trimester and I am looking forward to getting rid of it in the next few weeks. I've never had it in previous pregnancies.

But that may not be your experience! It may vanish next week.

It might not be pregnancy related. Have you eaten any pine nuts recently? Me, my sister and my DH had this horrible metallic taste for about 2 weeks after eating some pine nuts (was the only thing we had all eaten in common) and eating and drinking made it worse.

DD I have this too, yuck, yuck, yuck!

Sorry to hear about your horrible experience flybynight, I guess it'll go in 4 weeks or so?! It sounds a bit different from mine, as it makes my food taste horrible as I eat it, but it also leaves a lingering foul taste which never goes . Funnily enough I have eaten pine nuts recently, and I had some more this evening! I'm not going to eat any more now and hope that it makes a difference. Three other people ate the meal with pine nuts (including DH), and none have had any problems but still...
MC how long have you had this? It is so disgusting isn't it!

About a month, I'm 14 weeks so yes hoping by 16 it'll have resolved. I'm sucking mints all the time. Hope yours is better soon

Nymphadora · 24/03/2010 11:27

I find sweet foods/drinks (even mints) make it worse.

Regarding pine nuts, apparently it only takes one bad one to cause it, best to keep them in freezer apparently to stop them going off. Everything you eat or drink - including water makes it worse, but it does fade eventually - for me it was about 10 days, but my DH and sister ate more of them and it took longer to finally go.

Hi Dormouse,
Thanks for posting - I just looked up your thread because I have the same problem. My symptoms match flybynight's more closely i.e. food tastes fine as I eat, but everything leaves the horrible bitter aftertaste. I am 26 weeks into my 3rd pregnancy and have never had anything like this before.

Funnily enough I have had pine nuts in the last week, so am hoping that that is the cause and the taste will fade after 10 days as BP suggests.

I really hope it doesn't last until baby comes as food is my main comfort right now!

Hi, to me I believe it's my acid reflux causing the bitter taste

DorsetDormouse · 11/04/2010 20:20

Hi, just though I'd post an update, which is that the bitter taste has gone (hooray!) and I'm avoiding pine nuts like the plague. Thank you so much to BP for the advice about pine nuts, of course I'll never know whether they caused it for sure, but it started around the time I ate them, I had some more and it got worse, and now I'm fine. What funny things our bodies are, and how they do like to test us when we're pregnant!
Really hope yours goes away soon Lions, maybe it's the same reason? Good luck and tasty food to all.
x
