12 week scan wait for results!

I am ten weeks pregnant with no pregnancy symptoms (except tiredness) for the last two or so weeks and before that very mild so I am very anxious to have my scan and know everything is OK. I have just found out that after my 12 week scan at my local NHS hospital I will have to wait a week or so for results! I had no idea, really thought you would find out on the day after all that waiting, for us 9 weeks of waiting!

Does anyone know if from the scan on the day alone is it enough to determine that the baby is more or less OK? Are the results that come in the post purely about Downs? I am only 27 so hoping that downs is a very low chance.

You'll be able to see on the scan that the baby has a HB, is moving etc so that should be enough to reassure you. I'm not sure what results you'd have to wait for, maybe you should phone and ask. I hope everything goes well.

What you'll wait for are the nuchal test results which is for downs syndrome and other abnormalities. It's a blood test done n the same day so obviously the results can't be instantaneous. I don't know what else you're expecting from the 12 wk scan? It is simply to assess that there is a live and viable baby, check how many babies and in some cases, yours by the sound of it, they also do the nuchal fold measurement and blood test. You'll also be weighed as part of that test.

Hi brockleyD - I had my 12 week scan a week ago where they saw a strong heartbeat, the baby measured fine for its dates, they were able to confirm how far along I was and wrote down the nuchal fold measurement. All of that was fine. So although you might have to wait for up to 2 weeks for blood test results (as you do where I am in North Herts) I considered that at that stage I had the answers I needed about the baby being ok and started telling family, friends etc. I was told that if there were any problems with the blood test (ie "markers" for Down's or any other chromosomal problems) I would get a phone call within 72 hours. No phone call so far so that means I'll get a letter in the post in about another week. That should give me my risk of Down's - calculated from my age (31), nuchal fold measurement and the blood results. You might want to check at your scan as I'm sure there are local variations.

auburnlizzy78 I am hoping you went to the same north herts hospital that i am due at... they didn't do the combined test last time i had a baby and i am interested to know the process re letting you know how the scan bit went before you get the blood test bit back...

Well, I am at Princess Alexandra, Harlow, where I also get a nuchal scan plus bloods on the NHS. On the day, I was told the nuchal fold measurement (1.9mm) and told whether it is nomral, told whether the baby has a nasal bone (it does) and told whether the DV flow is normal or reverse (its normal). I then have to wait 10 days to hear by post if the bloods are fine. If the bloods are a problem, someone will call me within a week.
I understand that 80% of downs babies have reverse DV (whereas only 3% of normal babies have reverese DV) and 75% of downs babies have no nasal bone. So I felt pretty happy on the day (especially as baby was dancing around like mad!). That said, still slightly on tenterhooks for the blood results.

I am lucky in that I get nuchal + bloods on the NHS. However, if you get a private nuchal scan + bloods, you get all the results on the day.

Just checking...Has anyone here found out the gender at their 12-week scan??

Hi Daynee, you can't find out the gender at 12 weeks - its way too early. Normally, if the hospital allows it, you can ask at your 20 week scan.

Thanks KSal, but I've heard different things here - I'm in the U.S. and some women say they've found out, while some say the doc couldn't tell. I have heard there is like an 80% chance of correct gender identification at 12 weeks.
