Have my waters gone???!! Only 31+3 and terrified

Ok my heart is pounding as I type this. I went to make the bed back up as I got out of it this morning and there's a wet patch about the size of my palm on the mattress. I've taken a photo of it as evidence!! My bed sheet is white so it looks clear. I have no pains or blood. I've rung my MW and am waiting for a call back. I'm terrified if it is because I'm only 31+3. Baby was crazy active in the early hours of the morning.

put a maternity pad on as well in case, then if you do lose anything else, you will have it there for the midwife to check. Don't panic though, as you may have actually wet yourself a little without knowing. I have done that before.

It might be your waters, but it could also be urine, especially if you have an infection. (you could have one without knowing if you haven't been tested recently)

If they think your waters may have gone, then they will swab you to check (amniotic fluid is alkaline) and scan you.

Try not to worry, even if your waters have gone, it doesn't mean you'll automatically go into labour, and even if you do, at 31+ weeks, your baby has a very, very good chance of being absolutely fine.

I am having twins, and the waters around one broke at 14+5. I am now 17+4 and still pregnant and both babies are fine for now.

Tillyscoutsmum · 18/03/2010 12:10

I think that waters will continue to leak once they have gone so if there is nothing else coming out, then its probably not waters.

Let us know what the midwife says. Fingers crossed for you x

Midori, you're still fine? How scary.

OP, 31+ means an excellent prognosis even if they've broken. Try and be calm, and keep us posted.

Odd question, but have you sniffed the wet patch. If it smells sweet it is likely to be amniotic fluid if it smells of urine, then you can relax, but still check with MW. I did start to lose urine in the later stages of both pg's.

It could be your waters but don't panic. A similar thing happened to me with ds1, my waters started to go at 33 weeks and I was put on antibiotics and managed to hold on for a further 4 weeks before ds had to be delivered. Ring the hospital and go and get checked out. Good luck.

porcupine11 · 18/03/2010 12:30

Yes amniotic fluid smells very distinctive and I think it's pinky rather than clear?

thedollshouse · 18/03/2010 12:35

Although amniotic fluid is supposed to smell distinctive, mine didn't. Initially when I went to hospital they said that my waters were not leaking but a scan confirmed that they were going. By the time ds was delivered I had virtually no amniotic fluid left.

tortoiseonthehalfshell, I am OK, very, very scared, obviously, but holding it together for the sake of the babies. The babies on the other hand are fine. Twin 2 is swimming about in his/her intact waters oblivious to it all, and twin 1 is clearly determined to carry on as normally as possible. Because mine broke so early there could b eproblems with lung development limb deformities, but the main thing for me is trying to get these babies out alive and we'll worry about anything else after. There is thread about it all somewhere, I update after my weekly scans usually.

In my case, the waters are sometimes clear, sometimes yellowish and do have a smell, a litle like biscuits! Despite there always being no fluid or virtually no fluid around the baby at scans, I am still leaking on and off, as baby is still producing more fluid.

dymond · 18/03/2010 13:41

Hi first1, try not to worry.

My waters have gone early with all 3 of my pregnancies- currently I am 22 weeks and mine went at 18. So it doesn't mean that baby will come straight away.

My last one was very much like you have described, no big gush (sorry if tmi)and is just a gentle continual trickle.

With DS my waters went at 27 weeks and DD 24 weeks, both went on until 36 & 35 weeks and had no problems.

X

Hi all, I'm overwhelmed by everyone's kind replies so thank you very much My MW got back to me pronto thankfully and told me to go to delivery suite. DH is in Watford for a meeting, so called mum at work in a panic and bless her, she took me. Had a speculum exam and the cervix looked closed. They think it might have been a combo of incontinence as I have a cold atm and a cough or sneeze could have caused me to leak, plus there's evidence of thrush. Though I have no symptoms . Anyway, back home now and been told to wear a maternity pad for the next 48hours to keep check. Scary few hours to be honest! My pulse was sky high which the doc raised an eyebrow over but come on now!

Midori - I'm amazed by your strength. My Godmother's waters broke at 19weeks (though this was a good 10years ago) and her son was born at 25/26w and although he had a very rocky start, he's fine. And it sounds like your babies are fighters
