Is anybody else really itchy???!
I'm so itchy esp tops of legs/bum am thinking it could be Bio Oil that im having abit of a fit with, am not using anything new on bosy or with washing cloths etc,
just thought i'd see if anything else has the itchy sydrome?!

how far along are you? i have been mega itchy on/off though surprised the bio oil is causing it, ive found its helped alleviate the itch. Infuriating though, hopefully someone can offer a remedy to help you cope!

BexJ78 · 16/03/2010 19:50

If you are really, really itchy, you might want to mention it to your mw as can be a sign of something else (something to do with your liver i think.)

FabIsDoingPrettyWell · 16/03/2010 19:52

How far on are you?

You may need checking for obstetric cholestasis which is serious.

tartyhighheels · 16/03/2010 19:53

yes as bex says do mention it if super itchy - could be very important

I am 32 weeks and have had two episodes so far of maddening itch/bumpiness on my legs only, that caused me to scratch to bleeding point -- each time lasted about a week.

But the gp was not worried, and nobody even rang me back when I left a message on the mw answerphone! I think itchiness on the bump/trunk is perhaps more serious (though not always). And as others have said, OC is very serious and itchiness is a symptom, but don't jump to any conclusions just yet, as it may just be random pregnancy weirdness as it appears to be with me.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 16/03/2010 19:58

Oh and the best thing I've found to soothe it is a cream/gel called Doublebase, which pharmacists seem to have behind the counter but no need for a prescription. About a fiver for a biggish tube. Someone else on here also found it helpful (I posted about the itch thing a wee while ago).

heather1980 · 16/03/2010 20:02

i was really itchy when pregnant with dd, i had a quick blood test to rule out OC.
the mw said it was most prob just a combination of my skin stretching and dry skin. i covered myself in calamine lotion and took piriton tablets and it seemed to help.

I've been itchy since 11 weeks and it does drive me insane! Bizarrely, it is not the belly or the breasts that itch (this would be sort of natural with the skin stretching), but my back along the spine, shoulders and legs. Tried Clarins oil, Allergenics, other lotions and potions but without any effect.

GP prescribed Chlorphenamine (anti-histamine) - and it totally knocked me out! I knew it might make one drowsy, but felt as if I was coming out of anesthesia after one pill. And it did not help either.

The only thing that works (temporarily) is dry brushing, I almost purr with pleasure and relief as I do it...

Am 24 weeks gone and I had wild itchy legs, bump and lower back, which I scratched til they were raw, tried loads of different moisturisers/oil. None of them really did much so mentioned it to the doctor who gave me a prescription for an emollient - hydromol, which I wash with and use as a moisturiser. It's FANTASTIC! I still have the odd itch, but nothing like before.

Oddly, I didn't have this with my last pregnancy....

thehairybabysmum · 17/03/2010 21:53

google PUPP or PUP. I had it during 1st pregnancy, tis a nightmare, if you search my old posts i have a few threads realting to it.

You can take the antihistamine Chlorphenamine (piriton) if the itching is really bad.

PiratePrincess · 17/03/2010 22:42

I had really itchy arms with DD2.

My MW did a blood test, called me that evening and told me to go into hospital next day. I did and they did more tests.

I had cholestasis - it is a problem with the liver during pregnancy and it affects the unborn baby.

It's really important you get checked.

(My MW said I had to tell everyone who complained of itching, so Sally, here I am )

biscuitbear · 18/03/2010 07:56

I'm really itchy too and only 7 weeks. I showed it to GP but she just said it was eczema (which I've never had) but didn't seem bothered. I've got it on my back and some funny red spots on my tummy and arms. I think its just to do with surging hormones but will check with MW. I've been using my daughter's eperderm which is very thick but not working that well.

Hope you get some relief!

tanmu82 · 18/03/2010 09:28

I get itchy on my arms and back...I moisturise regulaarly and my skin feels soft, but when I lie down, whatever side I'm on itches me constantly....I'm 7 weeks now and it has gotten a little better, but still bugs me.....

lucylev · 19/03/2010 07:28
