stemetil/procholoraperazine during pregnanacy - anyone?

I have a balance disorder & get vertigo/dizziness & nausea/vomiting when it flares up. When I was in the first trimester morning sickness really aggravated my symptoms & after seeing a few gp's I was told stemetil was ok to take if necessary, it's the only drug that eases my symptoms. Now I'm 28 weeks & my symptoms have flared up again, saw my gp this morning & he said I couldn't take it in the 3rd trimester & also it would be a problem to take it however infrequently if breastfeeding. Bit depressed at this news but not 100% convinced he's right, I know they like to err on the side of caution which I understand but when my symptoms are severe I am incapable of doing anything. I always take the drugs as a last resort & a bit scared at the thought of not being able to take anything now.

I had stemitil through all 3 of my pregnancys for diffrent lenghts of time for hyperemsis they never said anything like that to me, maybe check with your midwife or diffrent doctor to check what he is saying? i also had it when breastfeeding dd2 for a while just remembered so i would check that info if i were you.

Afaik it is fine throughout pg and bfing.

I'd ask what basis your GP is recommending this on and ask for second opinion from someone specialising in that area.

nicky - the gp looked in his medicine book & said that it wasn't to be used - as it had only been tested on animals in pregnancy.

I've been discharged from my ent as they can't do any more for me but am under a consultant for this pregnancy due to anti bodies problem so will ask at my next appointment.

Aye, problem with the BNF thingy is it very quickly goes out of date and only deals with definitive answers wrt what is licensed for waht condition. FOr example, I was on a drug in pg which is actualy used fairly frequently but is as yet unlicensed in pg here. Thousands are on it. Look it up in the BNF and it'll say no to using it in pg, but ask a consultant obs and they'll say it is okay.
It is even more black and white according to BNF wrt meds and bfing, when in fact loads of drugs are fine to use. BFN and Kellymom have good info on this.

Herbietea - Just noticed your post saying you have menieres, it is horrible isn't it. I find it really scary the symptoms (not that I have menieres but similar symptoms) am getting worried that birth & the hospital environment will trigger all the symptoms as I'm really sensitive to flourescent lights etc.

Thanks Nicky- I remember when I was in hospital after having dd1 having lots of different medications including anti inflammatories & was bfeeding dd. 6 months later in loads of pain with inflammed knee was told it was paracetamol only (by gp)
