Sex and early pregnancy

I am 5 weeks today and had a chemical pregnancy last month. When I went to see my GP he said to abstain from sex because of the mc risk. I said 'what, forever??' and he didn't give me a proper answer.

I have done a bit of research on the net and it seems that sex isn't a risk factor for mc at all. I sometimes suspect the GP doesn't know what he's talking about . He actually said 'you should abstain from sex, there's no real evidence it causes mc but imagine how guilty you'd feel if you did and then had a mc'. Thanks doc, would feel bloody guilty now!

Has anyone else had similar advice? Are there clear guidelines anywhere? How long do you think we need to wait for?

That sounds absolutely ridiculous to me!!!! Not that I'm medically qualified or anything.

I've heard similar advice but aimed at women who've had mcs, along the lines of saying, if you've had one then don't risk it again. I thought that sounded bizarre because if it could have caused it first time, then surely the advice should have been given first time. As it is, I'm 13 weeks and steering clear until more like 16 weeks or even 20 because I'm paranoid about it. What a lucky husband to have such a cautious wife

Your GP sounds like a complete prat. Get a second opinion.

I've had 5 mcs, and was given the same advice by the EPU. Something to do with semen I think (disclaimer- I wasn't listening at the time to intently as I had just seen a 6 week HB on the scan and was more distracted by that).I forget the actual science behind it but was told there was a reason. Thats not that helpful really is it!?

I was quite happy to abstain TBH.ANything to get through and I was too damn tired to even contemplate it anyway!

There are other things you could do too though if you're not, aren't there?

HeadlessLadyH, I'm really sorry to sabotage this thread and turn it into my own question, but if it's possible could you share some advice? I'm waiting for Medicom to phone me back because I'm the last hour I've had a heavy mucus discharge and a spot of blood. Sorry if this is TMI. I've had two missed mcs but never noticed this before. I'm 12 and a half weeks along. I'm really sorry to put you on the spot if you're still here, but to you, does this sound like something to be worried about? I'm really sorry, I wouldn't ask but I can't find an answer anywhere on internet and a bit desperate. Thanks.

oosa I had really really heavy discharge at about your stage of pg, is it possible that its this? tmi, sorry but it was quite green and mucussy. How much blood was there? Have you phoned your community MW?

Oh thanks HeadlessLadyH, yes, my midwife just phoned me back after a bit of an agonising wait. It is the really really heavy snotty (sorry!) type of discharge. I'd looked on internet pages where the only conclusion I could come to was that it was the mucus plug coming away early. Turns out she said this discharge, like you describe, is absolutely normal. The little spot of blood she said is not rare and can be from a small cervical erosion, which isn't dangerous. Sorry to be such a panic head.
