Very worried after dating scan

I went for a private viability scan yesterday at BabyPremier in Harley Street and it turns out that while I thought there was a possibility I was about 9 weeks gone, it turns out that either I am a little less than 6 OR the pregnancy is not progressing.

I have to go back in 10 days but am besides myself and feeling very upset and disappointed.

To give a little back-history I?m 37 and had the contraceptive implant (Implanon) inserted last August (2009).. I didn?t get on very well with it and my partner & I decided that at some point soon we would want to try for a baby and so I had that removed at the end of November. The doctor put me on the mini-pill (Micronor) saying that when we decided to try, to just stop taking it.

I took my last pill on 31st December 09 and I had a bleed on January 2nd 2010.

In February I had quite sore boobs, was very tired and felt a little constipated so bought a pregnancy test. The first one that evening was positive, as was the 2nd the next morning(!).

I went to the doctor on 26th Feb ? she didn?t take a further test or anything but using the date of my LMP said that I was 8 weeks gone. She referred me to the local midwifes and said that they would probably call me for a scan at 12 weeks. For some reason ? I was feeling a bit paranoid, I took another preg test on March 1st which was again positive.

However as I had been a little erratic with taking the minipill and as I wasn?t sure if the bleed was a real period I was a little concerned that there was a possibility I was further along and didn?t want a ?late? scan as wanted to have combined testing for Downs. Which is why I booked the scan at BabyPremier. The scan showed gestational and yolk sacs but not foetal pole ? so as I say, I am either just under 6 weeks or the baby stopped growing at 6 weeks

The other thing I should mention is that I did have very tender boobs until a week or so ago. I was also very tired. I?d had no morning sickness. While I am still pretty tired (which could be due to the fact that I haven?t been sleeping very well through the night for about 10 days) my breast no longer feel anywhere near as tender as they were.

This combined with the scan results means I?m a little freaked out.

Has anyone had a similar experience? How did it turn out?

And apologies for the long and waffly message!!

Hi

When you come off the pill after your withdrawal bleed it can take a while for your cycle to regualte itself When I was on the pill I had a withdrawal bleed and then no period for 9 weeks then things settled down. It is possible that you didn't ovulate until much later as you don't mention another period and therefore your pregnancy won't be as far on.

Unfortunately I have been in the position of having a scan at 6 weeks and going back 2 weeks later to find nothing had grown or happened. It is very tough but fingers crossed it is not the case for you. I have also been for a scan at 8 weekd to be told there was nothing there and went back later to be told there was a baby.

Keep us updated.

Thanks for replying - No, no other period since the bleed on 2nd Jan.

I'll just have to keep everything crossed that, as you point outI may have just ovulated later than I'd originally thought and that I really am just under 6 weeks at the moment (though the fact my boobs aren't sore anymore is still a bit of a worry)... in the meantime I'll have to resist the urge to run to the toilet every 20 minutes to check I'm not bleeding!

Will keep you posted on the outcome anyway - and thanks again..

Cat

I have experienced both sides of the coin.

with my second pregnancy the baby was small for dates & turned out to be a missed miscarriage.

Had another mmc shortly after but am now 11 weeks preg. BUT I ovulated what I thought was 9 days late had cramping so i was aware of it. had i not known i'd ov late i would have gone for scan at what i thought was 7 weeks only to find baby measuring 5 weeks. luckily something came up so i didnt get scanned til 8 weeks only to be told i was 6+3 with a heartbeat.

long story short it can go both ways.

A good indicator is when you got your bfp. if it was very early in february then you would expect to see a heartbeat by now and if it was later in february there's a chance you just arent as far as you think.

wishing on a star for you xxx

Hi Lee and Oops - thanks for your replies to my original post of the other week and I just wanted to update you.

So - after the longest 10 days of my life I went for my 2nd scan on Saturday and it turns out that everything is fine!! I was approx 7 weeks gone on Saturday and a strong heartbeat could be seen.

It was so not what I was expecting the sonographer to point out and having convinced myself of the worse I promptly burst into shocked and relieved tears.

I imagine the next 5 weeks will be almost as nervewracking but I wanted to thank you both for your kind words and thoughts
