Hi, advice needed please! I am 5+3 and have been having abdominal pains for the last couple of days. They feel like period pains and rather than being painful, they are more of a nagging discomfort. It has been a while since my last pregnancy so it all feels new again and I'm not sure if this is anything to worry about. I have no spotting or bleeding. Do I need to see a doctor or is this perfectly normal?

I too have period type pains (am 4+6) and have had for the past 4 or 5 days. I think it is probably completely normal, as PMT type or cramps are a common sign of early pregnancy and it is still early days yet. If it gets really painful though, it might be best speaking to you GP / NHS Direct, just for peace of mind.

The cramping type pains can be quite normal. You can also get pain low down on one side or the other which is ligaments stretching, and sometimes a corpus luteuos cyst.

I'd say that if the pain gets worse, or you start bleeding then contact your gp.

I've never had an ectopic pg so I don't know. i know there is a LOT of stuff in the archives about it though. So maybe worth a look there?

I went in to see my GP anyway, as I was getting a bit worked up about it - no-one knows at work yet and I was getting all emotional. The GP was excellent. She checked me over, checked for infection, did another pg test and then I spoke with the nurse. They were both really helpful and reassuring and didn't make me feel at all like I was wasting their time.

I think I am on hyper alert as my sister has had a mc and an ectopic, and a friend of mine has had a mc and has ongoing fertility issues. Also, after having had 2 perfectly normal, healthy pg (and children) I feel like I am tempting fate by asking for another.....especially as we got pg first time without contraception - it all feels to good to be true....

Glad you feel calmer tanmu I had really quite strong period type pains (no bleeding) til I was about 7 weeks. I was told it's just things stretching. Pop back to waiting to ttc some time and sy hello, would love to hear you things go.

tanmu82 · 06/03/2010 10:07

will do pipoca, just in that stage where not much is happening, no-one knows, don't look pg (though is it possible that my belly is already poking out a bit - must be all the choc I am scoffing. No sickness at the moment....) I'm just counting the days until I am 12wks, though I am really trying to just get on with life and not count the days because then maybe time will actually fly by and I'll wake up one day and go 'oh, I'm gone 12wks already!' if you see what I mean....
