Pregnancy after mc, how can I request an early scan?

Hi, I found out at the weekend that I am pg again, following a mmc at the end of November. I'm obviously very very happy but also a little nervous this time around, as last time I didn't find out until my 12 week scan that the baby had stopped growing at 5-6 weeks. It is possible to request an early scan this time, and if so, who do I ask? And if I'm given a choice, when should I request the scan? I am 5 weeks now which I know is far too early for it to be of any reassurance.

TIA!

I suggest go to your GP and explain your worries and have him or her refer you to an early pregnancy unit..this usually happens fast and will give you some peace of mind! Depends really on how understanding your gp is really!

Where I was, you just self-refer to the EPU. I didn't actually register with the Midwives until I'd had three scans.

that is interesting Jee..cause in london where i ahd my two sons unless you went to A&E with some dreadful issue they would NOT scan you unncessarily! I had to be referred to the EPU by my GP!You sure did live ina very flexible place!

jeee · 01/03/2010 11:54

I don't know how flexible EPU is, but certainly when I started bleeding at 11 weeks I phoned them up on the advice of my GP and they said come in. Unfortunately I was miscarrying. But they told me then that I could self-refer in any future pregnancies.

Neeko · 01/03/2010 13:28

When I had my MMC last March the EPU gave me their number and told me to call them when I thought I was 7 weeks pg again and they'd have me in for a scan. (They said no point in scanning before then as unlikely to see a hb and would worry me more.) At that initial scan they arranged a further scan for 2 weeks later and my 12 week scan and filled in all the paperwork for me to take to my CMW. I was signed off from the EPU after my 12 week scan and I'll be 37 weeks tomorrow.
Is there a drop-in EPU near to you? If not, some tears at the docs (which, if you're like me, will come naturally due to the stress)may help.

Congratulations on your new pregnancy and I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks for all your advice. I had just booked to see my GP (a not particularly helpful bloke) next week but I may just rin the EPU that scanned me after the mmc and see whether they will see me at about 7/8 weeks.

Yes I had an early scan at 8 weeks after previous m/c. I just went to the docs and said the worry was just too much, she got me an appt the next day. I had an internal scan as on the tummy they could not see.

All was well, but they do warn you that all though they have seen the baby and the heartbeat, there is still a risk, a small risk of m/c. Don't want to worry you but be prepared for them to say this as I was a bit shocked when they said it.

Went on to have a DS2 who is now 3. good luck.

I had a mc in august then again in november last year. I am now 6 weeks pregnant again and im terrified so i rang my gp and explained and i have a scan on 10th march..they normally do offer early scans after a mc, but my epc won't see you without a referral from gp

whirleywoo72 · 05/03/2010 19:31

i had 5 msc, and i am 10wks pregnant, and i went to the doctors and explained to my doctor, and to reassure me, she got an appointment at the EPU (early pregnancy unit) at the hospital, had a scan, and spoke to me gave me advise, they were really helpful, they will see you up till 18wks, go to doctor or midwife.

i wish you all the luck, and try not to worry and enjoy it, the best you can.

GOOD LUCK ALL

dairymoo · 05/03/2010 19:33

Thanks everyone. I ended up ringing my EPU and they booked me in for a scan (in a few weeks time) without even asking for a GP's referral. Here's hoping it's a good one!

I think it depends on the hospital, I was refused so paid private. My GP even requested an early scan for me.

MammyC · 05/03/2010 22:05

the EPU at st georges, tooting is a walk in and they will scan you even if you just have anxiety. I am 8 wks preg after 3 mc and 1 bonny baby and i am gonna go in on monday because I am riddled with anxiety even tho i have no bad symptoms. good luck!
