Midwife Care (lack of!)

Hi All, I am based in Leeds. This is my second baby, the first time round care was regular (even if not very caring but this time i have seen the midwife for my booking scan and one other time. The last time i went she said 'right we won't see you now until 37 weeks!' I feel quite alone in the whole pregnancy thing. I have had a lot of worries and aches and pains but no one to check things over with. I tried contacting the midwife yesterday to ask about a pain under my ribs but couldn't get hold of anyone. The surgery said the next appointment was a week friday@ I have my 20 week scan next week so that will ease my mind a bit and luckily i have a doppler for the worrying moments.

Is this normal practice for second babies? I'm worried about the midwife care for the second baby when i'm in labour too!

Thanks
Cat

tbh you don't need frequent appts. you're just having a baby! you aren't ill.

BUT, if you do want to see one for a particular concern then yes, you ought to be able to get hold of one. if you can't get hold of the one at your surgery, then call the ante-natal dept at your local hospital they ought to be able to help.

so, my advice is, enjoy not having to go to millions of appts for the time being. but do push to see someone if you have an issue you want to discuss.

Well that doesn't sound right. How would they spot rises in bp, protein in the urine etc?

CherryPie3 · 26/02/2010 21:16

I agree doesn't sound right at all - there are repeat bloods to do at 28wks aren't there? And like Heated said - how will they monitor you for pre-eclampsia etc?

I'd question it - ring your hospital perhaps?

FWIW - I'm based in Wakey/Ponte x

Hello! I'm also in Leeds. However I can't really be a whole lot of help as I'm a first timer, so things might be running a bit differently for me?

I had my last MW appointment at 16 weeks and they're not seeing me again until 25 weeks I believe. However I do have the numbers of two MWs and Clarendon at LGI which I'm meant to call if there are any problems.

We must be at about the same point, as I've got my 20 week scan next week as well! Over at LGI on Thursday. Which day are you, and which hospital are you at, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm based over in West Leeds, Bramley area. Registered at LGI, but I have my sights set on a water homebirth.

[waves at CherryPie] You can't hide from me, Kaylo!

Check NICE guidelines - gives you run down of the new schedule of care for low risk second time mums. They recommended a reduced number of visits. If I remember rightly, 20 week scan - midwife appointment at 28weeks, 32weeks, 36weeks, 38weeks, 40weeks, 41wks (+sweep) but check out guidelines online. BTW both Jimmys and LGI have maternity assessment 24hr phone line you can call with general queries.

Hi Spirael Wasn't trying to hide from you hun Just spreading a little confusion thats all r

BTW - very very at your home waterbirth!! No way would my consultant tolerate such an idea from me!! But hey ho....theres a pool at the hospital - will see if it's free on the day

Hope you're well - I have my 20wk scan on the 11th so week after yours Sooo excited but not finding out 'flavour' of baby

(sorry for the hijack)

Spirael · 27/02/2010 21:34

You might be spreading confusion, but you'd better watch out in case random bites (bytes? ) start disappearing from your posts while you have that name! I love cherry pies. My DreamGenii pillow has pictures of cherries on it and DH has been joking that he'll find me chewing on it in the middle of the night.

MW seems happy with my birth ideas! I guess I'm pretty lucky that everything seems to be going fairly straightfoward so far. I think I'm meant to be seeing a consultant at some point, but it's just about the TB I had as a child that I was fully cured from and hasn't bothered me for nearly 25 years...so I doubt it'll be an issue.

I know what you mean about scan excitement. I can't wait for mine! I'm pretty sure the muscle twitches that have been plaguing my lower abdomen must be the LO, so hopefully everything's going fine and there won't be any bad news. Got my triple test results back and I'm a low risk, which is a relief!

I'm going to be asking to be told the 'flavour' if they can see. I don't really mind either way, but I'd like to be able to refer to the LO as either he or she... Not it!

Sorry, I hijacked as well catftm. Though incidentally, haven't I seen you in the Leeds chat area advertising childminding in the Bramley area? We must be pretty close, geographically! ... Either that or I'm getting confused.

I'm keeping a close eye on you Miss Spirael munching my posts indeed - although have to admit, I kind of adore cherry bakewells - do they count?

Glad you're having a non-complicated pregnancy chick
