quick question about early scan

Hi all

I have had two mc (and one child) and am now 8 weeks pregnant again. Am of course anxious about whether everything is ok and am considering asking for an early scan. My question is:

Do you think if they do an early scan they will still agree to doing one at 12 weeks? If it's only one OR the other then I'd rather wait. But the wait is killing me, I have to say!

Thanks in advance + good luck

Forgot to mention I already paid for a private scan at 5.5 weeks but the doc could only see a sac, not an embryo yet, and said the sac was marginally small but that could be b/c the pregnancy was younger than I thought.

So very inconclusive, hence here I am, wondering and wondering. Aaargh.

Think I should probably ask the GP all this and leave you all alone, but tbh I know you will be much faster than he will be at giving me answers...!

Thanks again

I had an early scan at 8 weeks - I went to my local EPU in London which offers a walk in scanning service and they did it then and there (I had my previous MMC treated there so they knew my history).

It didn't make any difference to the timing or availability of the 12 week scan where I am - but maybe it depends on area?

Good luck - if the pregnancy looks ok at 8 weeks (heartbeat etc) then the odds are very good - 98% I think.

With two mc I'm sure the early pregnancy unit would be helpful - my midwife actually suggested that I contact them with 'a little spotting' or 'abdominal pains' to get an extra scan before my 12 week scan purely to check dates! (I didn't - I was pretty sure I knew when I got pregnant)

you will get the 12 weeks scan no matter what so dont worry mate...i had 4 scans before 12 weeks with dd1 but they still gave me my 12 weeks scan ...hope this helps as its early and my pregnancy brain hasnt started functioning yet xxx

I had one mmc and for my 2nd pg (DS1) I had HcG levels taken to show that they were doubling.

I asked for this in my 3rd pg (DS2) but my midwife said they would just refer me for early scan, whic they did no problem.

Speak to GP/MW about your anxieties and ask which option they think would be most suitable. Try not to even mention the 'wait and see' option!

Good luck.

All of you were right, of course.

GP has booked me in for an early scan next week and confirmed that the 12 week scan is a routine one which will happen anyway. Fingers crossed now for everything to be fine next week...

That's not the same in all cases though - we were told if we had an early one we wouldn't get the 12wk one. Glad you will
