You'd be lucky......you have to have a posterior placenta, a baby in the right place and a good BMI! Because it's a 50/50 chance of hearing the heartbeat, and the anxiety it causes it you are in the 50% they can't most midwives don't try to listen to the baby. But you never know - good luck! Congrats BTW!

They didn't give me a midwife appointment until after my scan with DD (it was at around 15 weeks if I recall correctly). And even then all I remember is her taking my blood, a urine sample and reams and reams of paperwork.

I know that my midwives have nevertried to find a heartbeat with a doppler until 16 weeks.

I saw the heartbeat at my first scan at 10+2 and then heard it at my next appointment at 15+4, and I have an anterior placenta. Nobody listened to it at the booking appointment as I had that at the hospital on the same day as the scan - it's all done at once where I live.

Thanks everyone I`ll take that as a no then! Just have to wait a bit longer!

I seen my heartbeat at my first scan 9weeks next scan is 1st april for my 21 week scan

sonsmum · 24/02/2010 12:24

I heard the heartbeat at my 1st booking in which was at 11wks.....if you are slim there is a good chance it can be heard....though dont' worry if it cannot be heard...that alone does not signal something is wrong.

asparagusaddict · 24/02/2010 12:31

The midwife didn't even try and check the heartbeat at my booking in appointment.

The first and only time I have heard it was when I had to go to A&E at about 16 weeks and they checked it with a doppler then.

I've not had the heartbeat checked ant any antenatal appointment since either, maybe it just isn't routine here.

It is checked at all our ultrasound scans though.

Hi,i heard the heartbeat at 10wks at my first booking appointment,we did think i was 12wks though[date got changed at scan] so may be she wouldn't have tried other wise,i am slim and it is my third so maybe that helped?

tobago04 · 24/02/2010 13:39

p.s i did have to ask for her to have a listen

hoopyloopycow · 24/02/2010 14:09

I think I will ask, I am slim and Im convinced I did hear a heartbeat at dds booking in! only a week or so until 1st scan anyway. I just feel so anxious this time, which I know will prob be worse if they cant pick up a heartbeat but as I know that its hard to at this stage I think I could cope if they couldnt find one iyswim? worth a try I think?
