I'm suffering with something similar, its really awful isnt it? Feel like I am constantly hawking up green phelghm and have a horrible hacking cough to go with it. After suffering for a month I went to my doctor yesterday on the advice of my midwife (I had been coughing so much that I had burst a blood vessel in my eye . She checked my chest (also said it was clear) but said it could be an upper respiratory problem and gave me antibiotics which I'm taking.

If you've been suffering since the New Year I would definitely see your gp and get some antibiotics, it should have cleared up by now. And yes to answer your question I think its better to bring all the gunk up disgusting as it is!!!

no, phlegm can't cross the placenta

if your chest is clear it is probably just snot running down the back of your throat from your nose and hence being coughed up.

so it's a cold (ie a virus) and of course antibiotics won't make a difference.

Just chill out and rest up.

Ive suddenly started having this too - I am 16 weeks pg and it only started last week. A deep sounding cough and horrible phelym... on the weekend i took a glass of hot water and honey which seemed to work for that day. I havent tried the same during the week as only have time for cereal before dashing to work...worth a try.
