Friend's waters broken early and stranded in US

A friend and his pregnant girlfriend went away last week and her waters broke on the plane. She's 25 weeks and has spent a week on steroids and anti-bs.

I'm trying to find some support or advice or something that might help them, but am struggling.

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

Please

The poor girl, what an absolutly nightmare

I had an early rupture at 22 weeks and managed to stay pregnant for 5 more weeks

It sounds as if your friend will have to stay in the states untill the baby hs been born and it well enough to fly home. It would be madness to fly home in her situation as it is now. These tiny babies can come very quickly and it will undoubtable need a lot of special care. Where is she staying ? has she got good insurance ?

this is a great site about premature rupture of membranes, it helped me no end.

Thank you for the link. Tbh I don't know much at this point, I want to find out the hospital but all I know is that they were headed to New York.

I don't even know if they had insurance, but god I hope so because I imagine they are going to be there for quite some time.

Months I should imagine, at least until what would have been her due date.

I hope her insurance will pay for it.

i think knowing she is pregnant she would have definately got insurance. also if this baby is born in the states, although inconvenient, they have very good hospitals to deal with premature babies and at least she is in a country where the language barrier isnt a problem xx
i feel awful for them and i hope she can hold on for at least another few weeks x hope all turns out well. The only thing you can do is be there to talk if they ring and maybe help them with anything that needs doing back home, good luck

Yes thats true, she'll be well looked after medicially in the states

MumNWLondon · 22/02/2010 20:00

if she doesn't have insurance she will be bankrupt at best or not treated at worst. it costs an absolute fortune to have any sort of medical care in the USA. it would be irresponsible to ever travel there (even if not pregnant) without insurance.

Any news on your friends Slur?

llareggub · 23/02/2010 22:34

My friend's waters went at 25 weeks and she eventually went on to deliver at 30 weeks. The baby stayed in hospital for another 6 weeks but they are now home, healthy and happy.

Bump!!

any news?

blackcurrants · 23/02/2010 23:52

Slur, I live 45 minutes from New York City. Are they there?

I can't be any financial help to your friend, nor even offer to have them to stay, I'm afriad - but if she/her dh want a shoulder, advice as to hospitals in NYC, an introduction to my lovely midwife (I'm 19 weeks pg), some insight into the crazy medical billing system (not my forte, I've only been here a couple of years) or just someone to talk to over a cuppa, then I'm very happy to help. Let me know on this thread if they're in NYC?

The good news is that the medical care here is very, very good. The less good is that it's also very, very expensive, I'm afraid. I do hope she has taken out some travel/medical insurance - I imagine she will have done, most people do.

Fingers crossed for her x

Hi guys.

Thank you llareggub it is really good to hear a positive story. I haven't much to report actually, I haven't heard back yet but obv am not expecting to all that soon. Clearly, I think they have more on their minds.

And thanks to you blackcurrant that's very sweet and I will pass it on.

I will update though honest! and I have passed on that PROM link too.

Thanks muchly
