Major panic re. dental problems

I got myself into a state of absolute panic in the last day or so. Just found out I'm 5 weeks pg with baby#3, which under normal circumstances would feel me up with absolute joy, but...

  • last december I had 3 rather large amalgam fillings replaced with white ones and
now very worried about high levels of mercury in my system (+ still have 2 silver fillings left)
  • plus I have 15 year old (slightly loose) metallic based ceramic crowns on 4 front teeth, which were going to be replaced as soon as my gum disease was under control.

I spent the best part of the weekend reading though masses and masses of info on the internet about the effects of mercury in unborn babies. All in all, I'm worried sick about this baby now and I'm absolutely convinced that she/he won't be born healthy !!

Don't mean to sound cruel, but FOR GODS SAKE WOMAN!!!!! I can only add the following stop looking at bollocks on the internet, your child has more chance of being abducted by aliens that affected by the mercury in your fillings! Hope that helps

Its unlikely that your baby will have been harmed, but speak with your GP or dentist for some advice.

reikizen, you sound just like my DH . Only, half of what's written on the net does actually make sense. To make matters worse I found a thread on MN about some of you delaying TTC for months and months due to amalgam filling replacements done earlier... it makes me feel extremely irresponsible!

...just to add, baby wasn't really planned (not yet anyway).

lets get this right, you are worried as you had the mercury filings removed before you got pregnant? don't worry... if the treatment could possibly have harmed baby they would have told you not to TTC for x many months.

speak to dentist for reassurance. i had dental xrays before i knew i was pregnant with my DS and they were very helpful and he was fine.

Unfortunately, pregnancy wasn't really on the cards when the fillings were removed so it never got mentioned either by me or by my dentist.
I had some fillings removed yrs before the children came along and none of my dentists said anything about the risks involved.
I wasn't aware that they should usually warn you first.

Will definitely talk with GP and dentist though! Thanks for advice!

If it were dangerous the dentist would have asked you for confirmation that you were not pregnant.

Imagine how many pregnant women had amalgam fillings over the years before white ones were so common.

ilovesprouts · 21/02/2010 18:20

dont look on the net half of its tosh ,you should be ok if you are worried speak to your dentist or ring nhs for advice

I have a mouth full of fillings, even had root canal during pregnancy and my twins are perfect ;)

Don't worry!

MumNWLondon · 21/02/2010 19:35

yes if the treatment is dangerous for pregnancy they def warn you eg

a friend took treatment for acne and she had to have blood test to show she wasn't pregnant AND agree to take contraceptive pill

another friend had radioactive iodine treatment for an overactive thyroid told not to TTC for 6 months

another friend who had lympoma (sp?) was told after the all clear not to TTC for 2 years.

if you have an xray they ask you beforehand if you are pregnant - you have to sign a form saying you are not.
