Irregular Heartbeat

GibbonInARibbon · 18/02/2010 13:19

Had a scan yesterday and the sonographer noticed the baby has an irregular heartbeat. I have been referred to a consultant. Also says in notes 'small trace of fluid noted at the apex'?

Am in a bit of a state and wondered if anyone had been through similar?

Sorry- I thought this was going to be your heartbeat- but bumping for someone who knows anything about this.
Hope all is well, and many congrats.

GibbonInARibbon · 18/02/2010 13:34

Thanks CN, yes thought afterwards I should have made the title clearer.

How many weeks pg are you?
We had this with DS at 36 weeks - his hb raced up to about 220-240 and stayed there. I was referred to great ormond street for a fetal cardiogram which showed he had an extra beat.
There was no structural reason for this and it was more likely an 'electrical fault' (not a technical term!).
The plan then was to put me on a drug called Flecanide which passed to him and regulated his hb for the rest of the pregnancy (while having regular scans) - this sorted it out immediately.
I know how scary it is when heart irregularities is mentioned, but our little man is a healthy 2 yo and was discharged by the GOSH specialist at 2 weeks old, he called it "one of those things" that can happen.
Keep me posted won't you?

GibbonInARibbon · 18/02/2010 17:57

Oh muddler, thank you for replying, I really appreciate it.

I am 20 weeks, have an appointment with a consultant next week. They did briefly mention the 'electrical fault' and you saying about it too makes me feel a bit better.

Just hate waiting till Monday, it's all that's on my mind.

Thanks again for the reply

Me again! It can come and go in pregnancies so few people probably know about it - I know it is really hard not to worry but try to rest this weekend and keep your spirits up. If there was something serious with your baby's heart the sonographer would have seen it at 20 weeks.
I have everything crossed for you x

GibbonInARibbon · 19/02/2010 22:07

Thanks muddler, it was my 20 week scan it was picked up on, am 20 weeks now. I do appreciate your good wishes and I will rest and try not to get too stressed x

I had this when pregnant with dd and my first son had been born with a heart condition so you can imagion the worry. They sent me for a fetal heart scan in London where they confirmed there was an irregular beat. There was all sorts of talk about be giving birth at a hospital that could operate on baby straight away and there it may having a condition called fetal hydrops.

I cryed so much during this time, think it was from about 30 weeks and was convinced that baby was going to have to be sent to special care as soon as being born and gosh the amount of times i had to go in and have the heart beat monitored.

But it all turned out to be perfectly fine, my beautiful dd was checked as soon as she was born by the special care team and was fine and it was all forgoten about and has been fine since birth with no heart problems.

I am pregnant again now and would be relectant to worry too much if they found the irregular beat again as we had such an awful pregnancy for no reason what so ever.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you, but know the heartache and worry you must be going through, but from my experience it was all fine. In fact ds who DID have a heart condition was not picked up at all in pregnancy and i was worried about dd when there was no need what so ever.

Good luck xxx

GibbonInARibbon · 20/02/2010 21:50

Gemity, thank you so much for taking the time to reply and it's wonderful to hear that DD was absolutely fine, especially after what must have been such a tough time with your DS.

I know what you mean about worry, the last few days have been hard, I cannot imagine what you went through having it for weeks and weeks.

I am praying when I go on Monday it is something the consultant will dismiss (they said he may do this) as nothing to be concerned about, or that the beat is normal an not doing the weird jumping thing it was doing this week.

Congrats on your pregnancy btw and thanks again for the post x

good luck 2moro am sorry i couldnt add anything helpful. Waiting for news/seeing what the situation is, is just hurrendous. Hope it all goes well. All the best and congrats on your pregnancy

GibbonInARibbon · 22/02/2010 10:35

Thank you sisterlola

I am back and so relieved!

Tis a maturity thing and not uncommon, they say it's electrical. Even since last week I could see it had improved, not missing nearly as many beats. Consultant does not want me back for another check as he is confident it is this electrical thingy and as it has improved since last week already he does not need to see me again.

I can breathe again.

The relief is immense

Thanks for all the good wishes x
