How soon do you buy baby stuff?

I am 25 weeks with my 2nd baby. Obviously I have stuff from when dd was born so no need to buy loads but still lots of things needed. I'm feeling so superstitious about getting anything too early, I really didn't feel like this last time round. Am getting very tempted by baby clothes now though especially as our local baby shop has a sale on. Know the sex and having another girl but as dd was a surprise all the baby clothes we have until 3-6 mths are unisex. Dp keeps telling me I'm being daft being superstitious over buying things too early, is it just me who feels this way?

I'm terrible... I started buying bits and bobs before I even started TTC....

But now i'm actually pregnant realize I have nothing I actually need :p

Buy stuff now!!

KayloHalo · 13/02/2010 14:03

I'm afraid I'm the same as anythingwithagiraffeonit I bought loads whilst TTC. Sleepsuits, popper vests, etc. All unisex.

Am 16.5wks now and itching to go buy cot and wardrobe Don't need to buy any clothes until baby arrives as we're not finding out whether we're having a pink or blue baby.

Oh yes, we've also got the pram - t'was a bargain not to be missed!!!!

The only caveat I'd put on buying things (especially larger purchases) is to check the returns policy - its very uncommon but sadly some babies have problems, either very late in pregnancy or as newborns. Its worth asking yourself how you would feel if you were in that unfortunate situation and finding out whether the shop you intend to buy from would take things back, if that's what you would prefer.

Sorry to put a negative spin, but I did hear of a lady who lost her 1st born soon after birth and was then left with everything as the shop refused to take it back - and for her, having all the new baby things around just made things harder to deal with

We were really superstitious with dd1, but this time around I am having to be forcibly restrained

Maybe just a few wee clothes and bits and pieces now, and save the big purchases for 30wks or so?

When we did get the cot and pram, we left them in their boxes until about the week before when we couldn't put it off any longer. At some point preparedness has to take over from tempting fate.

pipinmybelly · 14/02/2010 16:31

hi there, iv been wondering the same. Im 16+3 with my first and found out yesterday from a private scan that bean is def a blue so went out today and got 2 blue outfits and some socks. I too am superstitious and think I will wait for the larger purchases. My mum is buying my pram and told me that she will keep it in her house and wont tell me she's got it so she too is obv spuerstitious. But I agree, at 25 weeks, u need to start getting a few bits and bobs before u leave it till ur too uncomfortable to go around shops etc. Enjoy the shopping!!

Thanks ladies, think I may be being a bit daft! Will give in to my baby buying urges, don't really need anything big tbh, part from a new cot mattress & things like that are a bit boring anyway. Think it's hard to get the balance right sometimes isn't it.

You're not daft. I am the same- actually I am worse. I will not buy anything until 7 months at the earliest (1st baby).

peppapighastakenovermylife · 15/02/2010 13:04

I tended to buy big things later on. Smaller things like outfits I was happier buying earlier as I didnt believe it would cause anything bad to happen and if the worst did happen then at least I would have a reminder?

I am pregnant with DC3 and really want to buy a few nice things that we didnt before as were too busy getting basics - nice sleepsuits, blankets etc. Will wait until after 20 weeks though probably.

MumNWLondon · 15/02/2010 15:43

I am 30 weeks with DC3 and have bought nothing. Will not buy anything until much later on. Obviously have cot/pram/car seat & clothes from Dc 1 and DC 2 etc but will need some extra stuff I imagine.

Will probably order it all at around 36 weeks?

With DC1 decided on cot & nursery furniture before she was born etc but didn't order until she was born. Had to get pram/car seat before but didn't take out of box until after she was born (did have to take car seat out of box though).

I know some people who buy NOTHING! A friend will bring newborn car seat to hospital along with newborn nappies and baby-gros once they hear the good news.

I'm probably more superstitous than most but know of several people who have either had stillbirths or whose babies died in first week, and not ideal if you have lots of stuff around.

first1 · 15/02/2010 15:56

I'm 27 weeks with my first and have bought cot, pram and car seat though they're all still in boxes and will stay that way for a good 10weeks. Only bought them because they were on offer when I was 24/25weeks. I know a lot of people who have bought stuff before 20weeks but I was too afraid to

jumblequeen · 16/02/2010 10:11

Personally, I think it's perfectly sensible to buy something if it's a total bargain, no matter how early on it is (within reason)... If you're that far in and denying yourself the chance to save some ££ in the sale, I would say, put your coat on now and get out there!
Not only that, but I doubt you're going to feel much like shopping in the last few weeks/months - far better to get it out of the way now.

I'm (almost) 18 weeks and have a few bits and pieces - mostly stuff that was too good to pass up and items very kindly offered on freecycle.

oopsandbabycoconut · 16/02/2010 10:26

I am 25week with DC2 and don't really feel the excitement about buying things yet. With DD we bought not alot until 38 weeks and nothing at all came into the house until she was born. We ordered her pram/carseat etc. and DH picked them up on the way to the hospital (we had already been to check we knew how to fit the car seat) Our local baby shop took no payment until it was collected or you delivered a healthy baby. I bought a few packs of babygros and vests which my mum washed for us and the stuff we had been given was stored at MILs. With this one DH bought a little outfit after the 20 week scan which hangs on the front of our wardrobe and yesterday I bought sets of matching babygros for DD and the baby. DD moving room soon and I might then get the bug and sort stuff out for the baby.

sungirltan · 16/02/2010 10:37

I had nothing until 24 weeks as I was so paranoid but went to Bump2Baby show and was so desperate to buy things I got a 3d scan to confirm the sex (hosp one was inconclusive) as soon as i she was a she i started buying little and often.

Meanwhile at 30 weeks i ordered a huge pile of stuff online but left it in the boxes. Dh was having none of this and took it all out and ripped all the tags off. I was terrified and told him 'if comething goes wrong now i will have even more hassle dealing with all this stuff!' ....but by my due date i was all pleased i had everything ready....and then dd was so dinky when she hatched that all the clothes i bought drowned her and i was back to square one again!
