Hi girls,

Have just had my BFP but have a dilemma re. alcohol abstinence! I have a two days of celebrations for my husband's 30th next weekend, and it will most certainly be spotted and commented on when people see me avoiding the booze. I am normally keen on a few drinks at a party! We have a family dinner, then a day trip to the football, followed by a big party. Any advice for hiding the real reason I'm not partaking in the booze would be much appreciated !! xxx

Drink plain tonic water with ice and lemon - make them or order them yourself and no one need know there's no gin or vodka added... likewise coke without the rum etc. Also, look into no-alcohol beers...

Thanks!

When pregnant with DS, DH and I always fixed it so that he or I would volunteer to go to the bar. I always loudly ordered a vodka, soda and lime and then got a soda and lime instead. Managed to 17 weeks without anyone being aware. That might work at the party.

At the meal how about saying you'll stick to water with your food as you had a drink the night before and are a bit hungover and you'll have a drink later? Might put people off the scent.

I'm now 14 weeks with DS2 and managed to fox everyone again up to this point. - I think! Bit stressful over Christmas but don't think anyone suspects.

I'd avoid the old antibiotics excuse. Definite sign of pregnancy IME.

Good luck!

Crossed posts with IC. Great minds think alike.

Great advice- thank you!! I must admit that I was thinking about the old antibiotics excuse, but then if any of my friends used that one, I suspect immediately!

My sister-in-law did a lot of holding champagne glasses at her sister's wedding before she was ready to announce. She would hold it, then put it down somewhere and move on. Or do a sneaky swap with her partner, so it looked like she was drinking. Only her aunt twigged what she was doing, we were all completely oblivious.

Another vote for having a drink but not actually drinking it by losing it/tipping it away discreetly/getting someone else who is in the know to finish it off for you. Works very well with a glass of wine during meals as long as you have water as well to stop you getting dehydrated!

In my experience people noticed if I wasn't drinking anything or something different, but barely anyone actually watches how much you drink - this approach got me through two months of boozy work events without being rumbled!

Also agree antibiotics excuse = might as well be wearing t-shirt saying I'm pregnant!

Final comment on this matter must go to my darling mother who couldn't understand why I got stressed about this because "Is it really that unusual for you not to have a drink everytime to go out? Yes Mother, it is"..... cue big frown and lecture on alcohol consumption.

Chesterado- fantastic. I imagine my Mum would be the same!

If people ask, say that you have recently had a stomach bug/similar, and that your stomach is still very fragile..or that you're on antibiotics for something..

I used the 'I've got a really shitty hangover' excuse, as a reason not to drink last weekend :p

mollybob · 13/02/2010 14:51

I did the have the same drink as DH and swapping glasses thing - but he got v drunk and I got v thirsty. If I was doing that again I would alternate with soft drinks for me.

mamaduckbone · 13/02/2010 14:56

I spent an entire wedding reception with the same glass of champagne in my hand, just took very tiny sips!

mamaduckbone · 13/02/2010 14:56

Congratulations btw!
