just been diagnosed as borderline anaemic and was recommended spatone by the midwife.

says it's best on an empty stomach which at the mo only happens first thing in the morning! sooo, do you think it's ok to say have a glass of oj with spatone first thing then ten/fifteen mins later have my usual bowl of porridge/shredded wheat? only it says that dairy hinders absorption. do you think the spatone would be absorbed by the time i have breakfast?

how/when do you take yours?

I do what you do, oobs, although I have read you should leave supplements (the ones to be taken on an empty stomach) for an hour before eating.

Maybe try what you're suggesting and see how you feel? You can take up to two during pregnancy so maybe take one in the morning and one at some other point during the day.

OR you could go dairy-free with your milk/switch to toast for your breakfast?!

hi oobs
had similar dilema with taking spatone. My breccy is tea, cereal and toast and butter(i.e. not good for iron absorbtion) and have to eat as soon as i get up or get nauseus. finally developed a routine of taking one sachet mid morning at least half an hour before i had my fruity snackfest of orange apple banana then another one before bed when id usually gone a couple of hours without eating. Some days i'd just take three sachets if i was worried i'd compromised the absorbtion.

Great stuff no side effects and easy to take and good to avoid going on the tabs if you can as the side effects can be awful. Unfortunately Spatone only really maintained my Hb levels and im now trying floradix but might go back to spatone or take both as i like it

Theres lots of tips on the spatone website about when/how to take it.

Basically says wait an hour.

I take mine late afternoonish, when I'm giving the dcs their post-school snack (keep it in the same cupboard).

I have to eat pretty soon after getting up (or am sick) and would definitely be sick if I took oj and spatone early morning on an empty stomach.

I took mine with breakfast bc I couldn't be bothered to regiment my day any further. It never upset my stomach and it still worked--my levels increased within a few days and I felt well for the rest of pg.

I took mine in the evening whilst preparing dinner - it was the only time I could remember. I took both sachets together with some organge juice and I'd probably eat my dinner about 45 mins later.
My iron level was at 11.7 at 16 weeks and it kept it at 11 by 28 weeks so the hospital were happy with its effects.

I mixed it with some grapefruit/orange juice and had it first thing, was quite nice actually and really sorted out my nosebleeds/extreme fatigue.

thanks everyone i'll check out the website too
glad to hear it works even if you don't do it on an empty stomach

Yep def try to avoid having to take the tablets, they are nasty and gave me terrible acid reflux and constipation....and they took 4 weeks of feeling like death before they kicked in.
I found that adding extra iron into my diet had the better effect - we lived on sirloin steak with spinach and broccoli for a while, DP didn't seem to mind!

You have my sympathies - anaemia can be very grim, I hope you're able to hold it off.
