I cant cope, I am tired and nauseous as it is, now a bloody cold. Plus have not had the swine flu vac as wanted to wait for 12 week scan which is this week.

so, has anyone else survived this? what did you take?

Dont panic!! Ive had a couple of colds in my pregnancy so far, i think its kinda inevitable for the amount of time we are pregnant. You're allowed to take paracetomol which will definitely help a little bit. Other than that, steer clear of medication, try hot water with lemon & honey, it helps with a sore throat and stuffy nose! Obviously if you start feeling absolutely horrendous then see your doctor, hope you feel better soon!

'has anyone else survived this?"

Probably. One or two people!

misspollysdolly · 08/02/2010 11:20

This is your first pregnancy, right? Three children down the line, believe me - you will just fine. Rest and drink lots. You can take paracetamol safely, but if you are worried call and speak to your midwife or GP. Don't ask any pharmacist in any chemist, they are all scared of pregnant women!! At 21 weeks with DS1 I had bronchial-pneumonia. We were both fine. Seriously, it is only a cold. Rest up and get well soon!

I had a desperate cold at about 8 weeks - DH thinks it was swine flu, but I'm sure it was just a horrendous cold.

I sent him to Boots to get whatever he could lay his hands on, that is approved for pregnant ladies.

He came back with some lemon and honey linctus, which was useless. You can take Soother cough sweets which I did find useful, as I had a cough, too.

You can't take regular lemsips, as they contain something other than paracetemol, but there is another one which he got for me that contains para, that helped. Just asked the pharmacist.

Other than that, plenty of fluids. I drank loads of water and orange juice, and try to rest up. It's no fun, but you will survive!

Awww, bless!
When I was pregnant I got a glass offull sugar lemonade and cut up a lemon, added to the glas then heated it up in the microwave till verging on hot, then took 2 paracetammol and sipped on the lemon drink, it really did help!

I had an awful cold a week before my due date, I was terrified as I could hardly breathe, had ringing ears and no energy, i thought 'how am I going to get through labour?!' Luckily it went before the birth!

You can aso use diet lemondae with lemons hot, with a teaspoon of honey which helps alot too and paracetamol obviously.

Disenchanted3 · 08/02/2010 11:28

Oh in a mug not a glass

can you put glasses in the miscrowave? probably not, try a mug

sorry im waffling today

I feel your pain! Just three days ago found out I am pregnant with my first child and the same day developed the most rubbish cold!

I want to jump around and be happy and look radiant and all that :p instead I have streaming eyes and nose and a very unladylike cough....

Also, I'm terrified to take paracetomol or anything before twelve weeks! Feel its going to fall out any second... is that TMI?

Pharmacy assistant told me I could use Olbas Oil, but no other decongestant. Hope she was right!

hazeyjane · 08/02/2010 13:54

I have had one cold after another this pregnancy, and a horrible infected sinus, the MW said it is because your immune system is suppressed. These are the things I found helped:

hot honey and lemon
paracetemol (taken every 4 hours)
karvol plug in at night
calpol saline nasal spray (its for babies, pharmacist said ok to use when pregnant)
steam (used humidifier)

it is horrible though, and you have all my sympathy.

I was being pathetic, last pg I was hospitalised for chronic pain and was on morphine so quite why I am reacting like this god knows!!!!! fear of swine flu I suppose....

Thanks for all sensible advice!!!
