Should I be concerned about my new found love for opal fruits???

Hi Ladies

I'm new to the site. Lovin' it already. Due my first baby in May so now 27 weeks (3rd trimester- woohoo!). All is going well so far (touch wood). Only thing is that I have developed a craving for fruity sweets like opal fruits, fruitella. Also loving sorbet and basically anything thirst quenching. My DH happened to mention this to someone at work yesterday and she questioned whether I might have developed gestational diabetes! Now totally freaking. Not sure if this is irrational. My urine tests have been clear to date and had my full blood count taken this week so suppose I should find out if anything is wrong from that. Probably just being paranoid. Just wanted to check whether others had a craving like this and no GD. I'm 29 and normal weight. Thanks

LadyOfTheFlowers · 06/02/2010 12:56

Opal fruits!? It's 2010!

kitcat1977 · 06/02/2010 14:44

I hope not! I'm now on Fruitella, via Giant Buttons (and only the giant ones!), Mars Bars, Hula Hoops etc etc

I so wish I could just crave celery or brazil nut or something more virtuous

cakeywakey · 06/02/2010 15:05

Yummy! Made to make your mouth water

Ignore the nutbar doom-monger at your DH's work and carry on as you are. My citrus cravings are mega too - and I'm only 12 weeks gone.

foodaholic · 06/02/2010 15:51

Thanks for the advice everyone. Clearly just being paranoid - will continue with my fruity sweets then!

I'm craving the fizzy haribo, must control myself :D

Alicetheinvisible · 06/02/2010 18:32

Kitcat have you tried the buttons that have caramel inside?

opalfruity · 07/02/2010 18:01

I'm slightly concerned, yes!

kitcat1977 · 07/02/2010 18:23

Mmm, the caramel ones. YES!

jojochanel · 07/02/2010 18:54

baby one was a chunkie kit kat boy. Baby 2 was a crunchie boy. the one I'm on with now is a is a lion bar baby. First two came out OK and the benefit of breastfeeding is you can carry on your habit for a while afterwards

Sorry to hijack thread, but related question: my sweet tooth seems to be in overdrive right now; will excess sugary things make my baby fatter?? Or does the baby just take what it needs, and and leave the extra for me? Not that I mind a chubby baby, but was just wondering. Am 36 weeks.

camflower · 08/02/2010 06:20

I love starbursts so much I factored them into my birth plan - took a huge bag to hospital with me,
(and loads of San pellegrino, my other craving!)

yum, you are making me drool

ChunkyPickle · 08/02/2010 21:30

Me too! Anything fruity and sweet (gummy bears disappear almost instantly). My other half raised it with the doctor as he was a bit concerned that I don't have much of an appetite for anything else but the doctor didn't worry at all.

His comment was that the baby's living off your blood sugar anyhow, so as long as your tests are fine, and you're not putting on excessive weight, it's better to eat what you're craving than eat nothing at all.

stressheaderic · 08/02/2010 22:23

I thought GD might have been a dead cert for me, considering I have a serious Pepsi and Haribo addiction, but no.
God I've never craved so much sweet stuff, ever. Cake, Dairy Milk, fruit gums, flumps, popcorn, fruitella, Sprite...nothing is safe.
Ah well.
