Colouring your hair in pregnancy

I have heard such conflicting advice, I am just interested to know if anyone has used permanent hair dye in pregnancy? I didn't with my first but seem to be even greyer this time round and getting a bit desperate! Thanks

I use permanent hair colour about every 6 weeks during my current pregnancy (need it every 4 weeks but by the time I get around to colouring, it's 6 weeks!), and did all the way through my pregnancy with DS1. My doctor and midwives told me it was fine. If it weren't I imagine we'd see all sorts of stripy haired ladies with big bumps around town!

Google the NHS guidelines. The alarm over hair dyes kicked off years ago when dyes were much more toxic than they are now. Today's home colourant-kits are far gentler. Plus, even back then, it was shown that you'd have to use industrial quantities for it to have any negative effect. There has never been any proof that dyes have an impact on the development of a baby but a slight "fear" of early miscarriage. Again, only people slathering it on all over or working with it all day would be justified in being a little bit anxious.

If you're cautious, then they say to avoid in the first three months. But once your miscarriage risk has gone down significantly after 12 wks there's no reason not to carry on as normal.

If you're still cautious, then just make sure the dye sits on your hair and not on your skin - your hair can't take any of the product into your system, only your skin.

And if you're still worrying... don't use it. Not worth the stress. But personally, grey hair would be more of a worry to me!
