How would you feel is a friend used 'your name'?

A friend who lives round the corner is pregnant with her second baby. I have 2ds but when I was pregnant both times we discussed names. She knows that we chose a name for a dd ages ago. Anyway I asked her what she was going to call this one. She said if its a girl it will be called x(my name!). I said nothing but was really upset when I got home and said she was planning on using 'our name'.

DH doesn't understand. He says our next might be a boy and if it is a dd we can still use the name. Its a pretty unusual one though and that was the whole point! She is new to the area and all our friends are the same now. I already feel like I know my dd with that name even if she isn't real!

Am I overreacting? I have not said anything to the friend. Not put name on here just incase she is lurking and will guess!!!

Miaou · 09/07/2005 15:06

Sorry muppety I just read back my last comment and realised that it could sound like I was suggesting you were being an arse........I'm not at all, I understand why you are miffed! But I think spidermama has hit the nail on the head with her comment.

Sorry...excuse pregnant woman engaging gob before brain....

lou33 · 09/07/2005 15:07

you bristled and i fingered, didn't see her being wagged at all

Twiglett · 09/07/2005 15:10

.. don't think you meant that, did you Lou?

lou33 · 09/07/2005 15:11

not answering that!

Redhelen · 09/07/2005 15:34

Maybe this girl has forgotton where she first heard the name & has remembered it as a cool name. Is she due before you? as it will be first come first served in my book!

I had a similar experience when I had my son - I've kept quiet in this pregancy!

starrynight · 09/07/2005 15:51

WHATS THE NAME?????

Lua · 09/07/2005 15:58

This is is a lslightly different situation, but my ex named his dog and his daughter with the same names as my cat and my DD..
I thought he was a creep, and don't talk with him anymore...

KatieinSpain · 09/07/2005 16:28

My cousin and I have exactly the same names . My aunt used the names my Mum had chosen for a girl. I know my Mum was livid with her sister at the time, but later decided she had chosen the names (one for a beloved great aunt and one because of family tradition) so used them anyway. Oddly enough, my cousin gets called Cat and I've always been a Katie.

Really, don't stress too much - it is obviously a fine name and if you really like it, use it.

popsycal · 09/07/2005 16:35

W eha d dh's brother going mad at us when we named our ds2 as it was 'his name'

he had never said anything to us about wanting it for a child of his....and whats more ds2 is name after my gorgeous grandad who is no longer with us

it is slightly differnt if she knew about it tho

purpleturtle · 09/07/2005 16:40

We chose a (what we thought was)relatively unusual name for ds. Another family in our church - mother has same name as me - had a ds 3 weeks after us, and he has the same name as our ds. We're not close, and decisions had been made before any discussion - but it can be a bit confusing at baby groups! Turns out, our 'unusual' name has become very popular since about 2000.

And, friendship groups change. Who's to say that you're still in touch 5 years from now?

I have THE most popular name of the early 70's so really wanted something unusual if I had a DD. TBH if she did go ahead and use it I wouldn't. My DH and hers and school friends so it does mean we will always be in touch.

Lets hope she has a boy after all this!! A lot of my very closest friends have quite honestly told me they would not want me using ther childrens names and I think thats fair enough. Things are slightly different though if you are talking about a name thats in the top 10 though.

KatieinSpain: I also have the same name as my cousin! I think my mum nicked it off her sister! It's kind of nice though. Muppety I'm sure your daughter won't mind having the same name as a friend - in fact it will be fun.

morningpaper · 09/07/2005 17:12

"TBH if she did go ahead and use it I wouldn't."

That's a bit mad if you've had your heart set on this name for 8 years. That's overreacting IMO! It's like you're whinging 'oh she's spoiled it now'. It'll be nice if they've got the same name.

PeachyClair · 09/07/2005 18:00

I nicked the name Samuel from a friend's Garandson and they were flattered. When i was pregnant with Sam we thought he was a girl (Bethany), a friend due the same day rang when Sam was induced ealy to xasually ask if the baby had arrived was it a girl or boy? First time they'd ever rung. Two days later their baby baby was born... Baethany.

well, it's a nice name so why not? And the story makes me giggle.

fireflyfairy2 · 09/07/2005 18:03

My Friend called her dd Zara... and was annoyed when her SIL called hers Dara.. as they are almost the same

She almost freaked when her sil actually told her she was pregnant..and due 3 days before her.. she kept saying to me "Wait and see..just you wait, she'll steal my name!" But friend went into labour early and SIL went overdue.. so Zara was born b4 Dara even that didnt please my friend... she said they'll be in the same class at school and they have the sae surnames too

QueenEagle · 09/07/2005 18:10

Slightly different, but when I was preg with no.5 and knew it was a boy before he was born, we were pretty set on a particular name. Same name my as my best friend's stillborn twin son. I asked if she would mind if we used the name or would she be really upset by it. She was delighted as she loved the name so much but knew she wouldn't have any more kids herself. It's kind of touching for us.

Mamatoto · 09/07/2005 18:15

I would be gutted Muppety ... a friend of mine recently said she was going to cll her baby if its a boy my ds's name and if its a girl my dd's. Odd! I know its kind of flattery but I think its unkind. I would not dream of doing it....

Janh · 09/07/2005 18:34

My niece has just given her new son my DS1's name - and if she'd had a daughter it was going to be my DD2's name!!! - I think in both cases this is just coincidence but I am very flattered on their behalfs (at least she didn't think "OMG I'm not having that!").
