How fast can baby develop. This will be my third and alway been on track with each both boys. Will second scan maybe put me back a few weeks if it has slowed oh no counting the weeks again lol.. or if still the same two weeks on and due date still same then could i deliver 38 weeks all so confusing!!!

Hi Lozzenge. I'm only on my first so what do I know and just because I am going to repeat what my midwife has told me does not seem (in any other respect) to mean that all midwives/NHS regions would say the same.

I was also redated at my 12 week scan - EDD brought forward by over a week. I am certain this is wrong going off date of conception etc but MW says my EDD will stand no matter what and the 20 week scan will have no impact upon dating. This is because (I am told) that between 9-13 weeks babies all develop at v similar rates and so if a measurement is taken at this stage this is what they will go off from then on. At 20 weeks babies have started to develop at their own pace somewhat more. My Mw said not to think of it in terms of being told that I am 14 weeks when in fact I am clearly only 12 but in terms of being told that I have 26 weeks to go rather than 28 because this is where the baby is at at a point where they can be relatively certain of how it "should" be.

Aussieng that's a good way of looking at it. I was brought forward (only by 4 days but still, when you're counting every week at the beginning, it does throw you a little) and am still convinced the date I worked out at the start is the right one based on period/ovulation but they do stick rigidly to their EDD after the scan. You just have to accept it.

I do like your "look at it in terms of how many weeks you have left, rather than how many you've done" approach.

Hi Lozzenge

I recently had my dating scan, went in believing I was 11+6 and came out being told I was 13+5!!!

With DS1 they moved my due date forward over a week at my 12 week scan, even though I told them that big babies run in the family and I knew the exact date of my LMP. This generally isn't done where I grew up (the USA) so it came as quite a shock to me. My son ended up being born 2 weeks after the EDD and 5 days after my original due date and was 9lbs 12oz. I'm now pregnant with DS2 and am not telling anyone what the EDD is (moved it forward again) as I can predict he'll be "late" as well!

Also, they only adjust the due date at the 12 week scan, but won't adjust it again at the 20 week scan. I guess it's too unpredictable! LOL!
