HELP advice needed (sorry if there is TMI)

I am 18+4 with my first LO. Each time I have a bowl movement and some of the times I urinate there is dark blood mixed with normal discharge. If TMI I am very sorry

I have been poorly over the last 4 weeks with Swine Flu followed swiftly by a nasty chest infection which means that I have been coughing quite violently for this period.

The MW I spoke to said not to worry as this is likely to be caused by the coughing, maybe I have burst a blood vessel in my cervix..... but as this is my 1st I am of course very worried and am planning to go to the GP tomorrow to see if they can get me a scan.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

when i had bloody discharge it turned out to be thrush, have you been on antibiotics for your chest infection?

I know its easier said than done but try not to worry. You say its dark blood rather than fresh, which is a good sign. I hope you get a scan tomorrow to put your mind at rest. I had a fair bit of bleeding up to 15 weeks with my first one, and everything turned out fine. GP was great about getting me referred to hospital for scans when it happened, so hope you get this too.

Could it be a UTI?

clayre yes I am still on antibiotics and sometimes I get thrush so this is a possibility. I will check this with the GP I think.

I am also going to ask them to check for UTI but I don't think so as I am showing symptons of this...

Thanks for the support greensnail, I have had lots of reassurance on the phone and I am starting to relax a bit but its fear of the unknown I think! I will feel much happier if I can have a scan just to make sure!

Gina...is there a walk in epu that you can access? if you are in london st george's in tooting have one, it is open from 8.30 til 11am and it's best to get there first thing. they will scan you without a referral. ime, gp referrals can take days before you get a scan.

the only thing that is going to really reassure you is a scan...and I'm sure it will...

So far GP has said no UTI and no thrush so off to hospital to see if they can work it out today.

I had a few episodes of bleeding (some dark, some red) always after a bowel movement.

As I'm rhesus negative blood group I had to have an anti-D shot every time I had a bleed so did end up having it investigated. (Worth checking with your midwife on your blood group if you aren't sure as you should have anti-d injections if you are a negative group).

They didn't believe for ages I was bleeding from the front not the back as they'd never heard of it being linked with bowel movement. (How many times can you explain to a doctor that you are SURE it's bleeding from the front). But then found I had a mild case of entropic cells on the cervix. This is really common and just means some cells from inside your uterus grow slightly outside on the cervix. They are very fragile and prone to bleeding, but no harm to you and the baby occurs.

Worth asking them if they can check you for this - it does mean an internal.

As you are over 18 weeks you should now been seen at the ante-natal clinic not EPAU. If your GP isn't helpful ring your maternity helpline at the hospital and ask if they will see you.

I'm sure it's nothing, but always nice to be reassured.
