gestational diabetes ??

Hello everyone,

my first son was born in 2003 and all was fine, but my 2nd child born in 2006 i had gestational diabetes and was assured that if i had another baby it would come back, has anyone had this and does it come back earlier in pregnancy?

I made the mistake of looking it up on the internet and scared myself on all the thing's that can go wrong etc

I wopuld really love to hear from someone that has been there and done it or has some exsperience as im really scared now :-(

I had GD with DS1 and then had it again with DS2, I was also told it was very likely that I would have it with my second pregnancy, so I was expecting it.

With my 2nd pg I watched what I ate a lot more and didn't put on nearly as much weight as I did with DS1. I didn't get GD until 35 weeks with DS2 (which was later than DS1) and I was also on a lot less insulin. I think weight gain makes a big difference to GD, or at least it did in my case.

P.s. Stop Googling!! I did that and scared myself witless. Both pregnancies were fine.

Thank you, i'm only little 5ft 1 and 8 stone and know one in my family has ever had diabetes and i eat healthy so it was completely out of the blue for me, i hardly put on any weight with my daughter it was just my tummy measuring big that they did the test and i controlled it with diet thank goodness i hate needles!!

I'm a tad concerned with the risk of miscaridge etc

Also that i may get it from 6 weeks into pregnancy dont get me wrong i will do my best for the baby but just under 9 months of restricted food is gonna be hard, but i defenetly feel reassured that you gt yours later in pregnancy.

Also did you baby have any complications after, my daughter had lovely chubby cheeks and had low blood sugar had to stay in a while after, also was avery hungry baby?

It sounds like I'm in a very similar situation to you. I had GD last pregnancy which came completely out of the blue (despite my Mum being a type 2 diabetic), as I was fit and slim. I managed to control it with diet alone, by cutting out all sugar and being strict with carbs. I was told it would almost certainly come back with subsequent pregnancies.

I found out I was pregnant again a couple of weeks ago (I'm now 7-8 weeks). I still had some testing strips left over from last time, so I've started doing tests from time to time and have noticed that already I seem to be getting some kind of insulin resistance as the readings have been a little higher than I might have liked. I went to the doctor who was kind enough to prescribe some more testing strips, so I've decided just to keep testing from time to time and adjust my diet slowly to make sure it stays in reasonable control. I've cut out sugar, but so far a lot of the things which were a big problem last time aren't too bad (7.9 after chilli and lots of rice, so next time I will have a bit less rice and test again, last time rice was a disaster).

The thought of the restrictive diet again and this time for longer is depressing- worst thing about pregnancy in my opinion.

Hve they not offered a test for you? im sure i was told that at 6 weeks you get checked?? it was 4 years ago and at the time i was adament i was not havinf anymore so didnt really pay much attention (silly me)

It is awful isn't it, of course we want our babies to be safe but pregnancy is hard enough and being pregnant gives you an exscuse to "eat for 2" i ended up loosing weigh and constantly eating no sugar jelly and drinking tuns of diet coke to get some sweetness, i really wasn't advised well on what to eat and struggled.

im confussed why i didnt get it in my 1st pregnancy, and still hoping i wont get it again but im sure that is really unlikely, im still young but none of that seams to matter that much.

was your baby ok after birth? and how did you find the birth, i was told i couldnt move cause i had to be monitored all the time it was awful i wasnt even aloud up for a wee!!

Generally they offer you the GTT at 28 weeks when GD seems to take hold.

Make sure you go to all MW appts for the urine tests (although it never shoed up in mine)

They assume you will get it in subsequent pgs. My advice would be to try to eat heathily in advance of any diagnosis. Low GI and eat little and often.

I was offered it at 28 last time when it showed up, i thought maybe they would test you before then as you had it in last pregnancys.

I think i was a little nieve with it and didnt not realise there was any risk to my baby so now i know all the facts im scared

If you feel that cnncerned I'd talk it over with your MW. Generally though, the GD doesn't appear until 28 weeks.

You may be able to manage it with diet alone. Get into good habits asap.

I'm not pregnant yet (well i don't think i am) but i have made an appointment with my doctor for next week, so hopefully she will reassure me a bit more, thank you :-)

Did anyone dosctor ask them to take extra folic acid as the risk of having problems is highr? or should i just stop driving my self mad and worrying about what could go wrong

Any info on what is reccomended before ttc is welcome .. such a worrier.
