on citalopram and want to have another baby?

Hi everyone :-)

I'm new on here, and was really hoping for some advice. I am currently on 20mg of citalopram and have been on for about 3 month's and i am doing very well on them. I have 2 children but me and my husband were hoping to have another baby and woundered if it was safe, also in my last pregnancy i developed gestational diabetes and have been told it is very likely to come back if i get pregnant again, has anyone had the same exsperience or can help?

I'm new too! I was also on the exact dosage for about 2 and a half months before falling pregnant with my 2nd. As soon as I found out, was about 8ish weeks my doctor made me go straight off of them and put me on some different ones, cant remember the name, he said they were the only ones safe to use in pregnancy. I tried them but my body really didnt agree with them and after about3 weeks of feeling terrible I went off of them. I am feeling ok, better than I thought I would as I must say was feeling really good on Citalopram. My sister is in South Africa and her doctor let her carry on taking it all the way through her pregnancy so think it might depend on your doctor and how strongly they feel about it, not sure! I was kind of glad he told me to stop as I was always a bit worried about any possible side effects.

Thank you, there is defenetly mixed emotions on this, i would perfer to stay on them as i had PND with both babies and couldn't relax with either of them (not realising i had PND) and was hoping now i feel myself that having another would be perfect and i could enjoy it this time round, but i dont feelm ready to come off them yet as llooking back on how i felt was horrible :-(

I think i'll make an appoinment see what doctor sais.

And i'm glad in not the only newbie today :-)

It definitely depends which doctor you see as to the advice you get. I am on 20mg citalopram too, and have been for ages - first doctor told me to quit, but i just reduced the dose to 10mg for the first trimester. The consultant said it was a relatively low dose and that 20mg would be fine.

Im now 36wks and all scans have been absolutely fine! You need to think of yourself and how pregnancy can be very stressful and a difficult time - not the best time to change such important medication!

Congratulations on your pegnancy pooter where you also worried about this before pregnancy?

I don't think i could manage without the medication as i had terrible panic attacks as well as deppresion.

I have made an appointment with my doctor for next week so hopefully things will be ok.

It's the internet that scres the hell out of me, i'm making it a rule not to look up anything from now on!!

thanks xkatyx. Yes, i was really worried - i already have a DS who i conceived and carried whilst on paroxetine (and is spectacularly normal!). I always try to research this stuff as much as possible, and after reading many many studies came to the conclusion that most of the women in them were on doses of 60mg or 40mg - so a lot more than us. The most important time is the first trimester when most cell division takes place, so mutation can occur more easily - which is why i cut down to my bare minimum then.

It was great to have my doctor (different one!) tell me to go back to 20mg though - as i was really struggling after losing 1.5 stone through 'morning' sickness and feeling really depressed about the pregnancy. I ended up having a 4D scan to help me bond with the baby and feel more positive about it all. It worked

brilliant, i'm really glad all worked for you :-) 4d scans are amazing i had one with my daughter and it's lovely to see how accurate it is when the baby arrives.

I think i may do the same cut to a really low dose and ope and pray that it all works out, mind you the whole going from 2 children to 3 is pretty scarey in it's self :-)
