Is smoked salmon safe to eat??

I'm going to a family meal on Friday and they're having prawns for a starter. I know they're not advised during pregnancy. I just wondered if smoked salmon is. It doesn't say in any of the booklets i've been given.

I know a lot of people carry on eating things they are advised not too but the way I see it if I eat something I shouldn't & something happens, I won't be able to get ris of the guilt!!

If smoked salmon is a no no, does anyone have any "safe" starter suggestions??

Hi Bananastew, you can eat prawns while you're pregnant, you just have to be sure that they're either well cooked or properly defrosted and used asap. Most people only buy them cooked and ready to eat anyway.

The Food Standards Agency website is where I go for what I can/can't eat and they have a Q&A that says while some countries advise women not to eat smoked salmon because of the risk of listeria, in the UK it's seen as ok because the risk is very low.

If you've not seen it, the pages are here:

you can eat either, or both.

yeah - i discussed this with MW who gave the usual 'no saefood' advice - it is more a bad idea to eat raw oysters in a restaurant, than a yummy prawn mayonnaise sandwich.

and salmon = doubly yummy, and fish anyway, not seafood...

Thanks for your replies. I think I might give it a go! It'll only be a little taste!

Enjoy...

In Sweden they tell you to avoid smoked salmon, but on the other hand they recommend that you eat pate!

The risks must be incredibly low from either.
